MOON TOWNSHIP, Pa. – The RMU men's soccer team fell 1-0 to Mercyhurst Monday evening at the North Athletic Complex. With the loss, the Colonials move to 4-2-1 overall on the season.
FIRST HALF
Through the opening 20 minutes of play, both sides were called for several fouls as the physicality was apparent from the start. Mercyhurst was also whistled for offside multiple times early in the match.
In the 40th minute, the Lakers broke through to take the lead. Following a fortuitous bounce, Mercyhurst found the back of the net to take a 1-0 advantage heading into halftime.
Each side was issued one yellow card in the opening 45 minutes.
SECOND HALF
Early in the second half, the Colonials came out firing with several scoring chances. RMU came especially close just three minutes into the half when
Nicholas Samways fired a shot that struck the top of the crossbar.
The physical play continued throughout the second half, with each side receiving another yellow card.
Over the final 10 minutes, RMU generated several opportunities, recording five shot attempts, but the Colonials were unable to find the equalizer.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- RMU held a 19-4 advantage in shots and a 3-2 edge in shots on goal. Anelson Azard and Tayshaun Reid each recorded four shots.
- The Colonials earned eight corner kicks, while the Lakers had one.
- RMU was called for 18 fouls, while Mercyhurst was whistled for 11.
- Senior goalkeeper Josh Lane made one save in the match.
- Tayshaun Reid and Filip Jeppesen each played all 90 minutes for the Colonials.
COLONIAL FIRST
Freshman midfielder
Bryan Sam made his collegiate debut Monday, playing for 11 minutes in the second half. The Bronx, N.Y., native recorded one shot in his first career appearance.
