Procedures to Appeal Reduction in Athletic Aid

As permitted by NCAA Bylaw 15.3.4, "Institutional financial aid based in any degree on athletics ability may be reduced or cancelled during the period of the award if the recipient:

  1. Renders himself or herself ineligible for intercollegiate competition;
  2. Fraudulently misrepresents any information on an application, letter of intent, or financial aid agreement;
  3. Engages in serious misconduct warranting substantial disciplinary penalty; or
  4. Voluntarily withdraws from a sport at any time for personal reasons.

RMU may not decrease a student-athlete's athletics aid from the time the student-athlete signs the financial aid award letter until the conclusion of the period of the award except in the case of one of the above circumstances.

As permitted by NCAA Bylaws 15.3.3.1 and 15.3.5.1, a student-athlete's athletics aid may only be awarded for a period of one year. At the end of that one year period, the aid need not be renewed at the previous value provided the student-athlete has been notified on or before July 1 of the non-renewal

Should a student-athlete wish to appeal a decrease or non-renewal or any decision made in relationship to the amount of Athletics Aid awarded to him/her, the following procedure governs appeals of scholarship reduction, renewal, or non-renewal at Robert Morris University.

Financial Aid Appeals Committee

The Robert Morris University Financial Aid Appeals Committee has been established to allow students the opportunity to appeal a decision made by the Athletic Department and/or the Office of Student Financial Services. The only individuals eligible for appeal are those students who have lost financial aid or scholarships due to academic reasons, or who have suffered a nonrenewal or reduction to their athletic scholarship.

You must provide documentation to support your case in order for the Financial Aid Appeals Committee to review the appeal. For example, if you are appealing because you have experienced illness that caused academic difficulties, then please provide medical bills and/or statements. Any additional documentation that you provide will be helpful to the Financial Aid Appeals Committee.

Dependent upon availability, the Financial Aid Appeals Committee consists of staff from various departments on campus. The Committee typically meets on the last working Monday of every month. The Financial Aid Appeal Form and corresponding documentation must be submitted to the Office of Financial Aid, Financial Aid Appeals Committee no later than one week prior to the meeting for the appeal to be heard that month. Students may appear in person to present their case, and should be aware that representatives from the athletic department (head coach, athletic director, etc.) will present the athletic department's position on the matter as well. Both parties will speak to the Financial Aid Appeals Committee separately, and will not be in the room while the other is presenting their side.

The decision of the Financial Aid Appeals Comittee is final. After the case is heard, the student will receive written notification of the Committee's decision shortly have the appeal has been reviewd.

If you have further questions, you may call the Director of Financial Aid at 412-397-6251.
