Jerry Stone completed his 20th year and 19th full season as the head coach of the Robert Morris University men’s golf team in 2020-21.
Stone has been the head coach of the men’s golf program since the spring of 2002, helping the Colonials finish in the top half of the conference standings in 15 of his 20 seasons. He has been named Northeast Conference (NEC) Coach of the Year on five occasions, sweeping both the men’s and women’s golf honors in 2009-10. Stone was named Tri-State Professional Golfers Association of America Teacher of the Year in April of 2013.
Entering the 2021-22 season, Stone ranks 19th all-time in NCAA Division I men’s golf tournament wins with 23. All 23 of those victories have come in an 11-season stretch from 2009-10 to 2019-20. His 2013-14 and 2014-15 teams tied the school single-season record with four triumphs each.
In 2018-19, Robert Morris claimed its fourth NEC championship in program history as the Colonials went wire-to-wire to win the event by six strokes. Stone was named NEC Coach of the Year and saw both Kyle Grube and Max Palmer claim All-NEC First Team accolades, with the latter becoming the third player in school history to capture NEC Golfer of the Year honors.
Similarly, in 2014-15, RMU claimed the NEC title with a wire-to-wire effort – taking home that trophy by 14 strokes. Stone also collected NEC Coach of the Year plaudits as a result, while four of his players were named to All-NEC teams, highlighted by Ryan Prokay's NEC Golfer of the Year nod.
In 2010-11, the Colonials finished second at the NEC Championships and saw RMU Athletics Hall of Fame inductee C.G. Mercatoris win medalist honors at the event. Mercatoris became the program’s first NEC champion since 1996 and third overall, while also being the first player at RMU to take part in a NCAA Regional. The Robert Morris women finished third in the same season and were led by Elizabeth Wagner’s third-place finish at the NEC Championships.
The previous season, Stone became the first coach in league history to claim NEC Coach of the Year on both the men’s and women’s sides. Both teams finished third at the conference championships after winning a pair of events during the season.
In all, 17 men and six women have been named to All-NEC squads during Stone’s tenure. Mercatoris won the aforementioned 2011 NEC Championship and was named NEC Player of the Year that season, while Ryan Mikita (2003), Damien Mackman (2005), and Max Palmer (2019) brought home runner-up finishes at the conference tournament.
Immediately prior to taking over the Robert Morris squad, Stone was the golf coach at Our Lady of Sacred Heart High School in Coraopolis, Pa. for four seasons. During his tenure, he had two players earn the right to play in the state championship and one team make a run at a WPIAL title.
A Class “A” PGA Professional, Stone has been a teaching professional at Scally’s Golf Center in Moon Township, Pa. since 1995. He has played in Tri-State PGA events since 1984 and is a member of the USGA, NGCA, and the PGA of America.
A 1982 graduate of Murray State, Stone earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in recreation and park administration. He attended Polk (Fla.) Community College for two years prior to enrolling at Murray State, and was a member of his respective schools’ golf teams for four seasons.
