Melitta Szymanski

In her first full season as an assistant coach with Robert Morris in 2016-17 is Melitta Szymanski. She joined the coaching staff in March of 2016.

Szymanski joined RMU after serving as an assistant coach at Carnegie Mellon from 2013 to 2015. While with the Tartans, Szymanski created workouts and coached the jumpers, assisted in recruiting and helped in planning and organization of home track & field meets.

No stranger to Robert Morris, Szymanski was a four-year letterwinner for the Colonials from 2006 to 2010. She owns the RMU indoor school record in the long jump thanks to a leap of 5.70 meters (18.7.75”), set in 2008 at Louisiana State. In the indoor track & field record book, Szymanski owns each of the top six marks in school history in the long jump as well as eight of the top 10.

Szymanski also owns the Robert Morris outdoor school mark in the long jump thanks to a tally of 5.76 meters (18’10.50”) at the 2008 Northeast Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships. All-time in school history, Szymanski posted each of the top three distances in the long jump for outdoor track & field as well as five of the top seven marks.

Szymanski was a two-time All-NEC First Team performer in the long jump, earning the accolades for the 2008 indoor season and the 2008 outdoor campaign. Also in 2008, Szymanski took part in the NCAA East Regional Championships during the outdoor season, placing 29th in the long jump thanks to a leap of 5.31 meters.

At the 2009 NEC Indoor Track & Field Championships, Szymanski compiled 23 points, the second highest total by an RMU student-athlete in school history.

Szymanski earned a Bachelor of Science degree in hospitality and tourism management from RMU in 2010 and that year was selected as the RMU Outstanding Senior Female at the annual RMU All-Sports Banquet. She is married to Mark Szymanski, a four-year letterwinner for the Colonials as a defensive lineman on the football team from 2006 to 2009.
