Pittsburgh, Pa. / Island Sports Center - The power play and senior goaltender Joe Tuset (Eagan, Minn. / Western Michigan University) proved to be the difference as the Robert Morris University men's hockey team shutout Merrimack University 3-0 at the RMU Island Sports Center Saturday night. Tuset made 29 saves to record his first career shutout in his sixth career start.
The Colonials took advantage of their 10 power play chances with all three of their goals coming via the man advantage. They totaled 11 shots on the power play while holding the Warriors scoreless in eight chances. It was just the second time in 16 games this seaosn that RMU did not allow a power play goal.
A scoreless first period was highlighted by nine blocked shots from the Robert Morris defense as the players on the ice accounted for more saves than Tuset who had eight saves in the period. The Colonials managed just four shots on net in the opening 20 minutes.
The Colonials capitalized on their second power play of the game 1:02 into the second period to take a 1-0 lead. An errant shot from the left point by junior Jake Sparks (Evergreen, Colo. / Central Texas Blackhawks) was picked up by senior Aaron Clarke (Peterborough, Ontario / Niagara University) behind the net. Clarke played the puck off of the pads of Warriors goaltender Jim Healey for his sixth goal of the season.
Robert Morris doubled the lead at 15:38 of the second period with their second power player marker. This time David Boguslawski (Cottage Grove, Minn. / Tri-City Storm) scored on the short side after a nifty passing play by Sparks and junior Ryan Cruthers (Farmingdale, N.Y. / Army). Sparks fed the puck from the left point down to the circle to Cruthers who one timed a feed to Boguslawski who was waiting at the top of the crease.
Sparks then stretched the lead to 3-0 when he beat Healey high to the glove side from the blueline for the team's third power play marker of the night just 1:18 into the third period. Junior Logan Bittle (Peoria, Ill. / Soo Indians) started the play from the left circle cycling the puck to the point to senior Doug Conley (East Amherst, N.Y. / Tri-City Storm) who found Sparks in the high slot.
The Colonials return to action in the feature game of the Pittsburgh College Hockey Showcase taking on third-ranked New Hampshire at 8:05 p.m. at Mellon Arena, Friday, January 5.
