Robert Morris Edged by Missouri State, 3-2

Box Score Moon Township, Pa. - The Robert Morris University field hockey team dropped a hard fought 3-2 decision to Missouri State Sunday afternoon at Joe Walton Stadium. The defeat drops the Colonials to 1-5 overall on the 2006 campaign, while the Bears improved to 3-3.

Missouri State struck first, finding the back of the net just 1:24 into the contest when Stephani Wehrman floated a goal past Colonial junior goaltender Kate Dunlap (Centerport, Pa. / Schuylkill Valley). Melissa Lantz notched the assist for the Bears. Later on in the first half Missouri State struck again, this time when Lantz scored an unassisted goal at the 16:50 mark to give the Bears a 2-0 edge.

Robert Morris closed its deficit to a goal when sophomore defender Laura White (Pennsauken, N.J. / Collingswood) scored on an assist from junior midfielder Megan Kelley (Mount Joy, Pa. / Donegal). The Colonials continued to put pressure on Bears goaltender Jessica Schuster, but Missouri State tallied the eventual game-winning goal when Wehrman scored on a breakaway with the less than seven minutes to go to give the Bears a 3-1 lead.

The Colonials crawled back to within a goal, 3-2, when junior midfielder Jessica Hammaker (Enola, Pa. / East Pennsboro) scored on an assist from sophomore forward Sarah Schrott (Quarryville, Pa. / Lancaster Christian) with 4:28 to play, but RMU was unable to tie the score in the waning minutes of regulation.

Robert Morris is back in action Saturday, Sept. 23, when it travels to St. Louis, Mo., for a 3:00 p.m. contest against NAIA foe Lindenwood in a neutral site game. The Colonials will also square off with St. Louis at the Anheuser-Busch Center Sunday, Sept. 24, at 2:00 p.m.
