RMU Crowned Nye Frontier Classic Champs

Anchorage, Alaska ? The Robert Morris University men's ice hockey team was crowned the Nye Frontier Classic champions Saturday evening after they defeated CHA foe Wayne State (0-2), 4-1. The Colonials also defeated nationally ranked Boston University Friday night at the Classic. The Colonials started the 2007-08 season, 2-0, which marks the first time that has happened in the programs history.

 

"I can't say enough how proud I am of this team and the effort that they gave this entire weekend in Alaska," said head coach Derek Schooley. "We played great defense all weekend and combined that with stellar goaltending. We received many timely goals from many different players."

 

RMU picked up in the first period where it left off in the third period of Friday nights contest, by scoring the game first four goals, including two markers in the first session. Senior Ryan Cruthers (Farmingdale, N.Y. / Army) tallied the games first goal 7:06 in. Logan Bittle (Peoria, Ill. / Soo Indians) and Kyle Burton (Calgary, Alberta / Calgary Canucks) picked up assists on the play. Freshman Nathan Longpre (Peterborough, Ontario / Mahoning Valley Phantoms) scored his first career goal and the game-winning goal with 6:30 remaining in the first period giving the Colonials a, 2-0, edge at intermission. Sean Berkstresser (Apollo, Pa. / Pittsburgh Forge) and Jason Towsley (Lasalle, Ontario / Leamington Flyers) tallied assists on Longpre's goal.

 

The Colonials continued their offensive clinic in the second period tallying two more goals in the final five minutes of the period. Towsley tallied his second goal of the season, from Longpre and Dave Cowan (Calgary, Alberta / Olds Grizzlys). David Boguslawski (Cottage Grove, Minn. / Tri-City Storm) notched his first goal of the season on a 5-on-3 power-play with just 27 seconds left in the second period.

 

Wayne State's Jon Grabarek broke up RMU's shutout bid with a power-play goal at the 17:06 mark of the third period, when he beat sophomore goalie Wes Russell (Springfield, Ill. / Quinnipiac).

 

Russell played the final 9:05 of the game who came in to spell senior goalie Christian Boucher (Orleans, Ontario / Cumberland Grads) who stopped all 19 shots that he faced.

 

The Colonials out shot Wayne State 22-20 and went 1-for-8 on the power-play with eight shots.

 

Notes: Three Colonials were named to the 2007 Nye Frontier Classic All-Tournament Team, including senior's Christian Boucher and Ryan Cruthers and junior Jason Towsley.
