RMU Knocks Off Wayne State in CHA Opener

Moon Township, Pa.  ? The Robert Morris University men's ice hockey team defeated College Hockey America foe Wayne State, 3-1, at the RMU Island Sports Center Friday night. With the win, the Colonials improve to, 3-2-0 on the season including 1-0-0 in CHA action.

 

Freshman Kyle Burton (Calgary, Alberta / Calgary Canucks) opened the scoring for RMU, with his first career goal, 17:39 into the first period as he deflected a Jeff Gilbert (Barrie, Ontario / Aurora Tigers) shot from the point past Wayne State goalie Kyle Funkenhauser. Kyle Frieday (Burlington, Ontario / Oakville Blades) also tallied an assist on the play.

 

Senior Jake Sparks (Evergreen, Colo. / Central Texas Blackhawks) scored the eventual game-winner just 1:41 into the second session with a rifle from the point beating Funkenhauser high. Ryan Cruthers (Farmingdale, N.Y. / Army) and Chris Margott (Thousand Oaks, Calif. / Bat State Breakers) picked up the assists on the goal. Junior Jason Towsley (LaSalle, Ontario / Leamington Flyers), notched his fourth goal of the season, just under eight minutes later, giving RMU a, 3-0, edge at the second intermission. Cruthers and Chris Kaufman (Gig Harbor, Wash. / Helena Bighorns) each tallied an assist on Towsley's goal.

 

Wayne State's Mike Forgie broke the shutout with 7:08 remaining in the contest, when he beat goalie Christian Boucher (Orleans, Ontario / Cumberland Grads), making the score, 3-1. RMU played exceptional defense in the third period, playing much of the period in their own zone and holding Wayne State scoreless on its lone power-play of the period when Cruthers was called for interference with just under 2:30 left in the game.

 

Boucher made 22 saves on 23 shots, while Funkenhauser stopped 23 Colonial shots.

 

RMU went 1-for-3 on the power-play, and held Wayne State scoreless on all five of its power-play chances.

 

The Colonials conclude their weekend series with the Warriors, Saturday evening at 7:35 p.m.
