Box Score Pittsburgh, Pa. ?The Robert Morris University women's ice hockey team was dealt their second consecutive loss as the St. Cloud State Huskies defeated the Colonials, 3-1, at the RMU Island Sports Center Friday afternoon. Robert Morris is now 1-5-0 on the season and a lifetime 0-2-1 against the Huskies.
Freshman Sara O'Malley (Guelph, Ontario / Hamilton Hawks) broke the ice scoring her first collegiate goal 1:16 into the first period. After taking a pass from junior Samantha Ullrich (St. Louis, Mo. / Team Illinois U-19), O'Malley streaked down the right side of the offensive zone using good speed to buy herself enough room to rip a shot over the left shoulder of St. Cloud's goaltender Kendall Newell for the 1-0 lead.
St. Cloud quietly picked their way back into the game, drawing the score even midway through the first period. Marie-Michel Lemieux scored the equalizer off a scrum in front of the net at the 9:19 mark.
The Huskies eventually took the lead early in the second period finding the back of the net off of the antics of Felicia Nelson on a four-on-four opportunity.
Just as in the second period, SCSU scored again early in the third period. Meaghan Pezon put the game out of reach as she fit puck into a small window between junior Brianne McLaughlin (Sheffield Village, Oh. / Ohio Flames) and the right post 1:28 into the frame.
McLaughlin finished the game with 26 saves while her counterpart Kendall Newell finished with 21.
For the third game in a row, Robert Morris held their opponent scoreless on the power-play, killing off five opportunities for the game. On the other hand, the Colonials finished 1-10 on the extra-man advantage.
St. Cloud State out-shot Robert Morris, 29-22.
Robert Morris wraps up the weekend series against St. Cloud State tomorrow afternoon in the second annual Skate for the Cure game at the RMU Island Sports Center. Face-off is set for 3:05 p.m.
