Box Score Pittsburgh, Pa. ? The Robert Morris University women's ice hockey team completed their first series sweep of the season, defeating the Sacred Heart Pioneers, 8-0, at the RMU Island Sports Center Saturday evening. With the win, the Colonials (3-6-1) extend their all-time series record over the visiting Pioneers to 8-0-0, dating back to the 2005-06 inaugural season.
Freshman Kylie Rossler (Regina, Saskatchewan / Regina Rebels) led the offense with two goals and one assist while teammate junior Jenny Monteleone (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Ohio Flames) tallied three helpers for her first points of the season.
Junior Megan Picinic (Cliffside Park, N.J. / Princeton Tigerlillies), junior Morgan Beikirch (Livonia, N.Y. / Buffalo Bison), senior Maria Olausson (Copenhagen, Denmark / Danish Nation Team), sophomore Jessica Riley (Hamilton, Ontario / Stoney Creek Sabres) and freshman Maria Stoa (Bloomington, Minn. / Eden Prairie) nabbed their first goals of the season while freshman Sara O'Malley (Guelph, Ontario / Hamilton Hawks) picked up one goal, bringing her series total to four.
After a scoreless first period, Robert Morris capitalized on a couple Sacred Heart mistakes with back-to-back short-handed goals in the second frame. O'Malley lit the lamp first, picking puck off at the Sacred Heart blue-line and taking it in for the 1-0 advantage at 4:17. Picinic stretched the lead to 2-0 on almost the same exact play for the Colonials' second short-handed score at the midway point.
With less than three minutes to play in the period, Stoa stretched the lead to three goals, scoring in the midst of a scrum in front of the net and giving the Colonials a 3-0 cushion going into the break.
Robert Morris would add to their lead late in the third period as part of a five goal, six minute run to end the game. Rossler started the frenzy off with her first of the night at 13:06 while Beikirch followed it up with a break-away goal a little over two-minutes later.
In the matter of ten seconds the Colonials pushed the score to 7-0 with Riley sneaking a puck in past the goaltender and pipe at 17:07 and Olausson with a score off of the face-off at 17:17.
The Colonials capped off the victory with a second goal by Rossler at the 19:00 mark, crediting help to junior Kathryn Traynor (Toronto, Ontario / Toronto Jr. Aeros) who finished with two assists for the game.
Junior Brianne McLaughlin (Sheffield Village, Oh. / Ohio Flames) earned her sixth career shut-out victory in net with 19 saves.
Robert Morris out-shot Sacred Heart, 45-19 while holding the Pioneers scoreless on the power-play, 0-5.
The Colonials are in action again this weekend as they make the trip up north to face Maine in a two-game series starting on Friday, Nov. 9 and concluding on Saturday, Nov. 10. Both games are scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
Notes: Through their seven games played at the RMU Island Sports Center this year, Robert Morris has killed off 37 of the 39 opposing teams' power-plays...The 16 goals scored against Sacred Heart are the most RMU has ever scored against a single opponent in a two-game series.
