Three-Pointer Helps RMU Sink Canisius, 91-73

Moon Township, Pa. - The Robert Morris University men's basketball team tied a single-game school record with 16 three-pointers in winning its second straight game Wednesday night with a 91-73 victory over Canisius. The win, which helped the Colonials avoid dropping three straight at the Charles L. Sewall Center, improves RMU to 7-4 on the 2007-08 campaign, while the Golden Griffins fell to 1-9.

Sophomore guard Jimmy Langhurst (Willard, Ohio / Willard) hit six three-pointers in the first half en route to a 7-for-10 performance beyond the arc, while junior guard Jeremy Chappell (Cincinnati, Ohio / Northwest) hit a trio from long range. Each of RMU's starting five hit at least two three-pointers in the win.

Robert Morris jumped out to a 10-3 lead early in the game as Langhurst hit a pair from downtown, but the Golden Griffins were able to tie the score, 15-15, on the strength of a 12-5 run. Canisius got five points from Pawel Malesa during its spurt, while Julius Coles added a three-pointer.

RMU nursed a four-point lead, 34-30, with 3:02 to go before the break, but an 11-4 Colonial surge helped send Robert Morris into halftime with a 45-34 edge. Langhurst hit a three-pointer, while senior forward A.J. Jackson (Monessen, Pa. / Monessen) converted a three-point play after being fouled by Malesa. Langhurst's sixth three-pointer of the frame with 47 ticks left on the first-half clock gave the Colonials a 43-34 lead, and senior guard Tony Lee (Boston, Mass. / Charlestown) converted a fastbreak layup as time expired to give RMU its largest lead of the game.

Each of the first four field goals in the second half for Robert Morris came from beyond the arc, as Langhurst and Lee each hit one while junior guard Bateko Francisco (Paris, France / Fort Scott J.C.) knocked down a pair to push the advantage to 57-40 less than four minutes into the stanza. The largest lead for the Colonials came when Jackson knocked down a three-pointer with 11:49 to go to give RMU a 69-46 lead.

Langhurst paced the Colonials by tying a career-high with 21 points on 7-of-10 shooting, while Chappell added 19 points, Jackson 15 and Lee 14. Lee also added 10 assists for his second straight double-double and paced RMU in rebounds (6) and steals (5). Canisius was led by Malesa and Frank Turner, who each scored 17 points. As a club Robert Morris shot 47.1 percent from beyond the arc, hitting 16 of its single-game school record 34 attempts. RMU also hit 16 three-pointers in an 84-83 setback to Fairleigh Dickinson Jan. 28, 2006. In that game the club finished 16-for-29 from beyond the arc.

Robert Morris is now off until Friday, Dec. 28, when it travels to the A.J. Palumbo Center to face off with crosstown rival Duquesne for a 7:00 p.m. tilt.
