RMU Sweeps Doubleheader from LaRoche

Moon Township, Pa. - The Robert Morris University softball team opened the home portion of its 2007 schedule Thursday afternoon by sweeping a doubleheader from LaRoche at the North Athletic Complex, posting a 9-2 victory in game one before an 11-0, five-inning victory in the nightcap. The pair of victories improve the Colonials to 3-9 overall on the 2007 campaign.

In game one Robert Morris took control with five runs in the bottom of the second thanks to five hits and an error. Junior Brenna Reed (Carnegie, Pa. / Montour) opened the scoring with a two-run home run, and sophomore Brooke Panepinto (Belle Vernon, Pa. / Belle Vernon) followed with a solo shot of her own to increase the Colonial lead to 3-0. Senior Danielle Cohen (Marlton, N.J. / Cherokee) helped RMU complete the homer hat trick with a solo shot two batters later.

The Colonials added four more runs in the bottom of the fourth on four hits and two errors. This time it was sophomore Megan Picinic (Cliffside Park, N.J. / Immaculate Heart) who got into the long ball act, as she hit a two-run home run that followed a leadoff single from Panepinto. Freshman Megan Lynch (Allison Park, Pa. / Shaler) capped the inning with a two-run single.

In game two RMU got the shutout behind the arm of Reed, who yielded just two hits in five innings of working while striking out eight and not issuing a free pass. The Colonials scored four runs in the first to take control and added five more in the third and two in the fourth. Senior catcher Jill Dorsch (Sewickley, Pa. / North Allegheny) broke out of her early-season funk by going 3-for-3 with a triple, three runs and two RBI. Lynch added her first collegiate home run in the nightcap, a solo shot, and finished game two 2-for-2 with two runs, while junior Camille Kline (Titusville, Pa. / Titusville) finished 2-for-3 with a run and four RBI.

Robert Morris takes to the road for its next doubleheader, traveling to Youngstown, Ohio, for a 4:00 p.m. double dip against the Penguins of Youngstown State Wednesday, March 28.
