Pittsburgh, Pa. ? The Robert Morris University men's ice hockey team fell to Princeton, 5-2, Tuesday night at the RMU Island Sports Center. With the loss the Colonials fall to 10-10-3 on the season, while the Tigers improve to 11-8-0.
Princeton took the early lead with a pair of first period goals, the first of which coming unassisted by Mark Magnowski at the 14:34 mark. The Tigers second goal of the period came on the power-play with Jody Pederson beating freshman goalie Jim Patterson (Kamloops, B.C. / Canmore Eagles) from in front of the net giving Princeton a 2-0 lead. Cam MacIntyre and Brett Wilson tallied assists on the play.
Chris Margott (Thousand Oaks, Calif. / Bay State Breakers) pulled the Colonials to within one goal with his eighth goal of the season, a power-play goal, at the 6:09 mark of the second period. Margott scored from below the goal line knocking in a rebound off a Kyle Burton (Calgary, Alberta / Calgary Canucks) shot, beating Tiger goalie Zane Kalemba. Ryan Cruthers (Farmingdale, N.Y. / Army) tallied the second assist on the play. The Tigers however scored a pair of goals 7:23 apart making the score, 4-1. Lee Jubinville scored at the 8:17 mark and Matt Arhontas followed with his second of the season at the 15:40 mark.
Each team added one goal in the third session, giving the Tigers a, 5-2 victory. Freshman Brandon Gay (Calgary, Alberta / Drayton Valley Thunder) notched his first career goal at the 16:34 mark of the period. Cruthers and Sean Berkstresser (Apollo, Pa. / Pittsburgh Forge) picked up assists on the play. Kevin Lohry iced the game with an empty net goal with 44 second left on the clock.
The Colonials went 1-for-2 on the power-play, while Princeton scored one goal on four chances with the man advantage. For the game, Princeton outshot RMU 36-27.
Patterson allowed four goals on 25 shots, while Wes Russell (Springfield, Ill. / Quinnipiac) stopped all nine shots that he faced. Kalemba picked up the victory making 25 saves on 27 shots.
The Colonials return to action February 1-2 as they host College Hockey America foe Ala.-Huntsville for a pair of games. Both games are set to start at 7:35 p.m.
