Friday afternoon, the Robert Morris University field hockey team traveled east to take on the Monmouth Hawks in their third NEC conference matchup of the 2008 season. However, Monmouth was able to pick up two early goals to outlast the Colonials and earn a 2-1 victory.
The Hawks took a 1-0 lead 27 minutes into the first period when Molly Passarella slipped the ball behind freshman goaltender, Stephanie Seeley (Louisville, Ky. / Ballard) to connect with Katie Amudsen who tallied the Monmouth goal.
Just before the end of the half, Monmouth's Enza Mazza picked up the eventual game winner as she broke away past a Robert Morris defender to score her third goal of the season.
Robert Morris cut the 2-0 deficit in half midway through the second period when freshman Hayley Botha (Johannesburg, South Africa / St. Mary's) tipped the ball over the Monmouth goalie for her first colligate goal.
However, the Colonial's comeback fell short as they were held scoreless for the remainder of the second period. Overall, Seeley made 14 saves while Robert Morris tallied seven shots.
Robert Morris returns to NEC action on Sunday, October 19 against Rider in Lawrenceville, N.J., at noon.
