Albany, N.Y. - The Robert Morris University men's hockey team was back in action in the consolation game at the Governor's Cup Tournament against Rensselaer on Saturday evening. The Colonials were unable to bounce back from a two goal deficit as they were defeated by Rensselaer by a score of 2-1.
Robert Morris had two play power opportunities early in the first period, but not covert the man advantage into a score.
With 1:48 remaining in the first period, Rensselaer's Erik Burgdoerfer took a hard shot past Colonial goaltender Wes Russell (Springfield, Ill. / Quinnipiac) to put the Engineers up by one.
In the first thirteen minutes of the second period, Robert Morris and Rensselear each had several opportunities to tally points, but solid goaltending kept the score at 1-0 in favor of the Engineers.
On a power play at the 12:17 mark, Rensselaer's Chase Polacek fired from the top of the left circle to notch the Engineer's second score of the evening. Assists on the goal went to Tyler Helfrich and Patrick Cullen.
Freshman Trevor Lewis (Lititz, Pa. / Syracuse Stars) recorded his second goal of the weekend with just over two minutes left in the second to cut the Engineer's lead in half. Sophomore Nathan Longpre (Peterborough, Ontario / Mahoning Valley Phantoms) and senior Matt Krug (Livonia, Mich. / Wayne State Univ.) picked up the assists on the goal to make the score 2-1.
In the third period, Robert Morris was able to kill off three Rensselaer power plays as Russell provided numerous key saves in net to hold off the Engineers. The Colonials outshot Rensselaer 8-3 in the third, and 41-32 overall.
Russell played a strong game in goal making 30 saves. Robert Morris was 0-4 on the power play.
The Colonials (1-3-1; 0-0-0 CHA) will return home to start CHA play on Friday, October 31 at the Robert Morris Island Sports Center when they host Alabama-Huntsville in the “Hockey on Halloween” showdown. The game is slated to begin at 7:35 p.m.
