The Robert Morris University Colonials played their second consecutive game that ended with a 2-1 score, but this time the Colonials were on the winning side of the score. In the Colonials first ever match-up against Cornell, freshman Brianna Delaney (Stittsville, Ontario / NCCP Raiders) scored a pair of goals for Robert Morris to lead the squad to a victory against the Big Red on Saturday afternoon at Lynah Rink.
Despite being outshot 16 to eight in the first period, the Colonials were able to come out of the period unscathed and entered the second period with the score knotted 1-1. Cornell player Hayley Hughes put the first score on the board 10 minutes into action. Delaney responded with a goal for Robert Morris three minutes later to even up the score 1-1. Senior captain Kristen Miles (London, Ontario / London Devillettes) added the assist on the goal.
Senior goalie Brianne McLaughlin (Sheffield Village, Oh. / Ohio Flames) posted 15 saves, while Cornell netminder Jenny Niesluchowski added seven.
Four minutes into the second period, Delaney capitalized on a power-play and came through for Robert Morris again, beating Big Red goalie Niesluchowski to earn the game-winning goal. Delaney now has four goals on the season and leads the team with five points. Miles and senior Samantha Ullrich (St. Louis, Mo. / Team Illinois U-19) tallied the helper.
Both teams had a relatively even opportunity to score in the second with Robert Morris posting 10 shots and Cornell shooting off 11. McLaughlin made 11 saves, while Niesluchowski made nine.
In the third period, Robert Morris' defense really stepped up to the plate as they were outshot 11 to two, and allowed no pucks to find the net. McLaughlin tallied her fourth win of the year in another impressive performance of 37 saves to Niesluchowski's 18.
With the win, Robert Morris evens up their record to 4-4-0. The Colonials return home next weekend to take on Providence on November 7 and November 8 at 7:35 p.m. on both nights.
