Detroit, Mich. ? The Robert Morris University men's ice hockey team defeated College Hockey America foe Wayne State, 3-1, Friday night. With the victory the Colonials improve to 12-11-3 overall and to 7-4-2 in CHA action, while the Warriors fell to 8-19-2 overall and to 4-9-0 in CHA play.
Senior Sean Berkstresser (Apollo, Pa. / Pittsburgh Forge) gave the Colonials an early, 1-0, lead at the 15:30 mark of the first period with a power-play goal. Chris Kaufman (Gig Harbor, Wash. / Helena Bighorns) and Denny Urban (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Ohio Blue Jackets) tallied assists on the play.
The Warriors tied the game with the only goal in the second period when Stavros Paskaris scored just 3:30 into the period. Ryan Bernardi and Jeff Caister recorded the assists on the play.
Senior Ryan Cruthers (Farmingdale, N.Y. / Army) tallied the game-winning goal just 3:12 into the third session, a shorthanded goal and his first goal in five games, giving RMU a, 2-1, lead. Chris Margott (Thousand Oaks, Calif. / Bay State Breakers) and Rob Cowan (Calgary, Alberta / Olds Grizzlys) picked up the assists on the play. Margott iced the game with his 13 goal of the season on the power-play, giving the Colonials a, 3-1, lead. Cruthers and Urban both picked up assists on the play with 3:20 left in the final frame.
Senior goalie Christian Boucher (Orleans, Ontario / Cumberland Grads) made 21 saves on 22 shots for the Colonials. Brett Bothwell faced 30 shots, making 27 saves for the Warriors.
The Colonials went 2-for-9 on the power-play, while outshooting the Warriors 30-22.
Robert Morris and Wayne State will meet again Saturday night, concluding their two-game series in Detroit, Mich. at 7:05 p.m.
Notes: With a pair of points, one goal and one assist, Ryan Cruthers set a new RMU single-season mark for points with 39, surpassing his mark from last season when he tallied 37 points ... Also, he moved to within one-goal of tying his single-season mark of 17 goals set last season.
