Colonials Compete at Orlando Rebel Games

Moon Township, Pa. ? The Robert Morris University softball team continued regular-season action this week as they traveled to Orlando, Fla. for the Orlando Rebel Games. In all the Colonials are scheduled to play 10 games before they return home from the sunshine state. RMU currently sits at 1-3 through two days of games having defeated Yale, 1-0, and falling to Butler, Penn and IPFW.

 

RMU opened action in Florida against Butler, falling, 1-0. The game featured only four hits and saw a combined 18 strikeouts. Alex Boras drove in the only run of the game in the top of the first allowing Lindsay Schluge to score. Brenna Reed (Carnegie, Pa. / Montour) pitched a complete game allowing the games only run on three hits and striking out seven batters.

 

The Colonials defeated Yale in their second game on Monday, 1-0. This time it was RMU scoring the games lone run in the first inning when Reed scored on a Brooke Panepinto (Belle Vernon, Pa. / Belle Vernon) sacrifice fly to right field. Freshman Lindsey Moates (Ocala, Fla. / Forest) picked up the win pitching seven shutout innings. She struck out three batters and allowed six hits.

 

Robert Morris lost a pair of games on Tuesday, falling first to Penn, 1-0. After a pair of fourth inning lead off walks, Alisha Prystowsky bunted both runners up a base putting runners on second and third. Kelsey Wolfe then came to the plate and hit a slow roller down the third base line forcing Susan Perich (Center, Pa. / Center) to make the play to first and allow Butler's Bridget McDugall to score.

 

RMU's second game on Tuesday afternoon was a complete opposite of the teams first three games of the week. After three-straight, 1-0, contests the Colonials game against IPFW saw nine runs cross the plate. IPFW put four runs on the board in the top of the first inning. The Colonials then scored all three of their runs in the third inning, while only tallying one hit. Perich got on base with a walk and advanced to third after Stacy Davidson (Akron, Ohio / Springfield) reached first on a fielder's choice and an error by IPFW shortstop Kayla Hall. Davidson then stole second and Kayla Crooks (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Brashear) was walked to load the bases. Two batters later Kristin McDaniel (Yardley, Pa. / Pennsbury) picked up a walk allowing Perich to score. Reed then singled to right field driving in both Crooks and Davidson making the score, 4-3, through two innings. IPFW would hold RMU off the scoreboard for the rest of the game while tacking on two insurance runs giving them a, 6-3, victory. Moates took the loss pitching six innings allowing six runs on five hits, while striking out five batters. Annie Dubovec (Chagrin Falls, Pa. / Penn Cambria) pitched a scoreless sixth inning allowing one hit and striking out one batter.

 

The, 2-7, Colonials return to action at the Orlando Rebel Games on Wednesday, March 13 as they take on Butler at 1:00 p.m. and Penn at 5:00 p.m.
