Moon Township, Pa. - The Robert Morris University women's tennis team notched its first victory of the 2007-08 campaign Saturday afternoon with a 3-2 victory over in-state rival Saint Francis (Pa.) and finished 1-1 in weekend action, dropping a 7-0 decision at home to IPFW Sunday morning. The Colonials now own an overall record of 1-7 on the 2007-08 campaign.
RMU garnered the victory over the Red Flash thanks to a trio of wins in singles action. At the No. 1 flight, junior Kali Delorie (Canonsburg, Pa. / Peters Township) defeated Roxy Ionescu in three sets, 4-6, 6-4 and 7-5.
At the No. 4 singles flight, freshman Sara Meier (Saint Mary's, Pa. / Elk County Christian) garnered a 6-2, 6-3 win over Ashley Zalewski, while senior Gwen Dalphon (Elkton, Md. / Bohemia Manor) downed Juliana Gustafson, 6-1 and 6-4, at No. 5 singles.
In doubles action, Delorie and senior Libby Shaw (Lower Burrell, Pa. / Burrell) teamed up to defeat Inoescu and Eva Keresztes, 8-2.
Dalphon and Meier fell to Zalewski and Gustafson at the No. 2 doubles flight, 8-0, while the third doubles match wasn't contested.
The Colonials garnered the 3-2 win because of no doubles point being awarded and no match being played at the No. 6 singles.
Robert Morris closes out its regular season with four matches away from home, beginning with a 3:00 p.m. league match at Mount St. Mary's Thursday, April 3. The Colonials will also visit George Mason Friday, April 4, for a 3:00 p.m. non-conference match.
