Moon Township, Pa. ? The Robert Morris University softball team defeated Cleveland State, 7-5, before falling in game two, 7-6, in ten innings Thursday afternoon at the North Athletic Complex. The Colonials are now 10-12 on the season.
Robert Morris jumped on top early and stayed on top in game one courtesy of a five run second inning. Megan Lynch (Allison Park, Pa. / Shaler) got things started with a single. Susan Perich (Center, Pa. / Center) and Kristin McDaniel (Yardley, Pa. / Pennsbury) each reach first base loading the bases for Camille Kline (Titusville, Pa. / Titusville). Kline drove in pinch runner Megan Picinic (Cliffside Park, N.J. / Immaculate Heart). Kayla Crooks (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Brashear) and Jessica Calderone (Wilmington, De. / St. Marks) combined to drive in four runs with a pair of back-to-back two RBI singles, making the score, 5-0, at the innings end.
Christa Coppus put the Vikings on the board with a solo home run in the top of the third, but RMU put two more on the board in the bottom of the fourth. After a pair of Crooks and Calderone two out singles, Lauren Nisivoccia (Nutley, N.J. / Mount St. Dominic) drove both runners home with a double. Cleveland State attempted a comeback with a four spot in the top of the sixth but never got any closer as they fell to the Colonials, 7-5.
Lindsey Moates (Ocala, Fla. / Forest) pitched seven innings in picking up her sixth victory of the season. She tallied six strikeouts while allowing five runs on eight hits.
Robert Morris continued to roll through the first six innings of game two jumping out to a, 5-1, lead. The Colonials started with three runs in the first inning with a Calderone leadoff single. Three batters latter with Calderone on third and Brooke Panepinto (Belle Vernon, Pa. / Belle Vernon) Lynch drew a walk which allowed Calderone to score on a wild pitch on ball four. Panepinto later scored on a Stacy Davidson (Akron, Ohio / Springfield) single and pinch runner Picinic scored on an error by catcher Amy Powell.
Cleveland State tied the game at five all in the seventh inning sending the game to extra innings. Each team scored a run in the ninth inning before the Vikings scored the game winning run in the tenth when Haley Keller drove in Andrea Nagy with a single to center field.
Annie Dubovec (Chargin Falls, Ohio / Kenston) took the loss pitching nine innings allowing seven runs on 12 hits.
The Colonials return to action on April 5 when they travel to Wagner for a pair of Northeast Conference games.
