Box Score Moon Township, Pa. - The Robert Morris University field hockey team continued NEC action at Joe Walton Stadium on Sunday afternoon as the Colonials hosted the Hawks of Monmouth University. In a very evenly matched contest, the two teams fought to a 1-1 deadlock at the end of regulation. However, the Hawks emerged victorious with an overtime goal to win, 2-1.
Robert Morris notched the first goal of the game when junior Catherine Myrick (Twin Valley, Pa. / Twin Valley) netted her first score of the season to give the Colonials the early 1-0 lead at 14:06. Sophomores Chantele Crow (Dauphin, Pa. / Central Dauphin) and Sam Hayden (Louisville, Ky. / Assumption) both were awarded assists on the goal that was a result of a penalty corner.
Monmouth rebounded back seven minutes later with Katelyn Buckley's goal scored off of a rebound to tie the game at one all.
For the remainder of regulation, the score stayed tied at one with the Colonials holding the edge on shots, 17-12 . The teams then headed into a 15 minute overtime period.
Only six minutes into the sudden death overtime, Monmouth's Ena Mazza took a rebound past RMU goalie Stephanie Seeley (Louisville, Ky. / Ballard) and into the back of the cage. The game winning goal was Mazza's fifth score of the 2009 season.
Freshman Paige Neat (Louisville, Ky. / Christian Academy) made the start in goal for RMU, stopping three shots in the first 30 minutes of action. Seeley came in for 54 minutes and made two saves. Myrick, a forward, also recorded a defensive save.
The Colonials are now 1-8-0 on the season and 0-2 in NEC action. They will continue conference play on Friday when rival, Saint Francis (Pa.) travels to Joe Walton Stadium for RMU's third NEC contest. The game is set for a 3:00 p.m. tilt.
