Robert Morris Drops Game to Mercyhurst, 8-1

Erie, Pa.- Feb. 14, 2009 ? The Robert Morris University women's hockey team fell to the No. 3 Mercyhurst Lakers, 8-1, in the second game of the series on Saturday afternoon at the Mercyhurst Ice Center. Sophomore Sara O'Malley (Guelph, Ontario / Hamilton Hawks) scored the lone goal of the game for the Colonials in the defeat.

 

Robert Morris got off to a good start when O'Malley scored the first goal of the game at 2:56 in the first period, with sophomore Maria Stoa (Bloomington, Minn. / Eden Prairie) adding the assist. Unfortunately, Mercyhurst recorded eight unanswered goals throughout the remainder of the game.

 

Valerie Chouinard and Meghan Agosta led the way for the Lakers, as they both recorded four goals in the win. Choundard tallied back-to-back scores at 6:46 and 12:57 in the first to put the Lakers up 2-1 going into the second period.

 

Agosta was the stand-out in the second period, as she lit the lamp once at 5:07 off an assist from Bailey Bram and again at 18:12. Jesse Scanzano and Cassea Schols dished out the helpers on Agosta's second goal.

 

In the third period, Agosta continued adding to her collection, recording her third consecutive goal at 4:05 and her fourth goal at 8:55. Scanzano handed out assists for Agosta on both goals, while Chouinard added a helper on the first goal of the period and Jess Jones captured an assist on Agosta's second third period goal.

 

Chouinard finalized the score 8-1, registering two goals within a thirty second span, with the first goal coming at 11:04.

 

Senior RMU Goalie Brianne McLaughlin (Sheffield Village, Ohio / Ohio Flames) finished the game with 28 saves, while Mercyhurst goalie Courtney Drennen accumulated 12 saves.

 

The Colonials went zero-for-seven on the power-play, while Mercyhurst was four-of-nine, scoring four of their eight goals with an extra man.

 

With the loss, the Colonials drop to 11-17-2 overall and 4-7-1 in the CHA and Mercyhurst improves to 23-5-0 overall and 12-0-0 in conference play.

 

The Colonials return to home ice next weekend to take on conference foe Wayne State in their final home game of the season. On Saturday, Feb. 21, Robert Morris women's hockey will honor nine graduating seniors who were part of RMU's inaugural season.
