Emmitsburg, Md. ? On Sunday afternoon, the Robert Morris University softball team tangled with Mount St. Mary's as the Colonials continued in their second day of NEC play. Robert Morris cruised to a 7-1 win in the first contest while the second was postponed due to rain.
Freshman Alexa Bryson (Greensburg, Pa. / Greater Latrobe) had another strong outing on the mound as she allowed just one unearned run in her complete game performance. The RMU victory was Bryson's ninth of the season.
The Mount took an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third, however the unfazed Colonials bounced back immediately in the top half of the fourth to take a 2-1 advantage. Senior Susan Perich (Center, Pa. / Center) doubled into left center to drive in Allie Patton (Poland, Ohio / Poland) and deadlock the game at one. With Perich at second, Kristin McDaniel (Yardley, Pa. / Pennsbury) notched a single to bring in Perich and take the lead.
With runners on the corners and two outs, the Colonials produced another pair of runs in the fifth. Attempting to pull off a double steal, Jaci Timko (Houston, Pa. / Chartiers-Houston) snuck home to extend the lead to 3-1. Senior Brooke Panepinto (Belle Vernon, Pa. / Belle Vernon), who went two-for-two against MSM, then brought in Patton for the Colonial's fourth run.
The Colonials then tacked on another run in the sixth when McDaniel stole home after reaching base on a fielder's choice. The final two runs came in the top half of the seventh as Perich tallied a triple to send in Panepinto. Freshman Sarah Capp (McKees Rocks, Pa. / Montour) then recorded her second hit of the contest to grab an RBI and bring Perich home.
The make-up date of the second contest has yet to be determined.
Robert Morris will return home to face the Kent State Golden Flashes on Wednesday, April 1 at the North Athletic Complex. The twin bill is set for a 2:00 p.m. tilt.
