Box Score Pittsburgh, Pa. - January 23, 2010 - The Robert Morris University Colonials completed the sweep of the Sacred Heart Pioneers with a 13-4 win on Saturday evening at the Robert Morris Island Sports Center. The win was a complete team effort as 11 different players scored goals, 14 captured at least one point and 10 tallied multi-point games.
Former Colonial and current member of the 2010 U.S. Olympic Women's Ice Hockey Team, Brianne McLaughlin, made an appearance at the game and dropped a ceremonial puck to start the contest.
In the win the Colonials broke a Robert Morris program record for shots in a game with 54, while also tying a program record for goals scored in a contest with 13. In addition, freshman Jennifer Kindret's (Winnipeg, Manitoba / BC Breakers) goal just 17 seconds after the opening faceoff was the third quickest RMU goal to start a game.
"We had a really good weekend," said assistant coach Scott Spencer. "It was great to finally score some goals and hopefully we will be able to continue that against Mercyhurst."
The Colonials shocked the Pioneers by scoring four goals within the first eight minutes of the opening period. Kindret started the contest with her sixth career goal off an assist from fellow rookie Dayna Newsom (Oakville, Ontario / Oakville Ice). Junior Maria Stoa (Bloomington, Minn. / Eden Prairie) quickly gave RMU a two goal lead when she found the open net at 1:53, with freshman Kathleen McDonald (Kamloops, B.C. / Team BC & POE) and freshman Whitney Henderson (Elkins Park, Pa. / Princeton Tiger Lilies) assisting on the play.
At 4:33 sophomore Brianna Delaney (Stittsville, Ontario / NCCP Raiders) set the score at 3-0 when she beat SHU goalie Raelene Sydor. Freshman Kelsey Thomas (Hamilton, Ontario / Hamilton Hawks) and junior Sara O'Malley (Guelph, Ontario / Hamilton Hawks) added the helpers on the play. Freshman Cobina Delaney (Stittsville, Ontario / Ottawa Senators) ended the scoring in the first period with her first career goal at 7:22 during a power play to give RMU a 4-0 lead heading into the next period. Junior Whitney Pappas (Evergreen, Co. / Belle Tire) and Kindret were credited with the assists.
Robert Morris wasted little time in the second session to add to their lead. Sacred Heart was called for a penalty 12 seconds into action and O'Malley capitalized on the extra man advantage to score her 14th goal of the season at 1:33 off assists from Delaney and Stoa.
The Colonials scored five more times before the end of the second period, while holding the Pioneers scoreless. Newsom contributed a goal at 3:35 off assists from C. Delaney and senior Mallory Giambra (Rochester, N.Y. / Rochester Edge), Thomas scored her fifth goal of the season at 6:49 off a Delaney assist and rookie Courtney Langston (Warrensburgh, Mo. / Shattuck St. Mary's) secured her first career goal at 8:24 with Jessica and Jordan Riley (Hamilton, Ontario / Stoney Creek Sabres) assisting on the play.
Jordan Riley added a goal of her own at 13:03 with her sister Jessica Riley (Hamilton, Ontario / Stoney Creek Sabres) and sophomore Kathryn Stack (Edmonton, Alberta / Edmonton Thunder) adding the helpers and Langston captured her second goal of the period at 18:37 on an unassisted play during a power play to give RMU a 10 goal cushion after two periods.
Once again, the Colonials took the ice and found the net within the first two minutes of the period when Giambra sailed the puck into the net at 1:28 on an unassisted play.
Sacred Heart was finally able to get on the board when Jamie Mey scored her third goal of the season at 2:33. That goal triggered three more Pioneer goals within the next 11 minutes to cut into RMU's lead 11-4.
Robert Morris was able to get back into a scoring groove at 13:42 when Kindret captured her second goal of the contest on a power play off an assist by Jordan Riley. Henderson finalized the score 13-4 when she flipped the puck into the net at 16:27 off an assist by C. Delaney.
The Colonials outshot the Pioneers 54 to 22 and converted on four-of-five power plays, while holding the Pioneers scoreless on two chances.
Freshman Kristen DiCiocco (Niagara Falls, Ontario / Stoney Creek Sabres) earned her second career win with seven saves with teammate Marissa Angel (Mullica Hill, N.J. / Princeton Tiger Lilies) contributing in the win with 11 saves. The SHU duo of Sydor and Emily Siira combined for 41 saves.
Robert Morris enjoys a week off before traveling to Erie, Pa. to take on No. 1 Mercyhurst in a makeup game on Tuesday, February 2 at 7:05 p.m.
