BUFFALO, N.Y. - The Robert Morris University men's ice hockey team fell in overtime Saturday night to Canisius, 3-2, in Buffalo, N.Y.
The Colonials (7-4-1, 6-4-1) got a goal from Brandon Blandina (Centennial, Colo. / Indiana Ice) with 1:58 remaining in regulation to force overtime against Canisius but the Golden Griffins (5-5-4, 4-4-4) scored with just a 1:01 left in extra period to earn the win. Kyle Gibbons score with 1:01 left in the extra frame to give the Canisius the win.
Chris Kushneriuk (Ottawa, Ontario / Orleans Blues) gave the Colonials an early lead 1:07 into the game. Denny Urban (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Ohio Blue Jackets) picked up the single assist. Eric Rex tied the game at one in the second period with an even strength tally.
Cory Conacher gave the Golden Griffins a lead with an even-strength goal at 13:32 of the third period. Blandina evened the 1:58 left in regulation. Eric Levine (Wheeling, Ill. / Pembroke Lumber Kings) got the start in net for the Colonials and put together a solid performance making 29 saves, including making 13 stops in the third period.
The Colonials went 0-of-5 on the power play and 5-of-5 on the penalty kill, including killing off a five-on-three near the end of the second period. The Colonials' best scoring chance in the overtime came after they killed off a penalty and Nathan Longpre (Peterborough, Ontario / Mahoning Valley Phantoms) was left all along on a breakaway but his backhand shot went wide.
Robert Morris returns to action against Bentley Dec. 3 at the Island Sports Center with puck drop scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
