Clifton, N.J. / Upper Montclair C.C.-Sophomore Brock Pompeani (Aliquippa, Pa. / Hopewell) won the second tournament of his career, firing an second round one-over par round of 73 to help the Robert Morris University men's golf team defend its title at the Fairleigh Dickinson Knights Invitaitonal Tuesday. Pompeani was also at the champion at the Mount St. Mary's Spring Invitational as a freshman before taking his second title.
After opening the event with a round of 79, Pompeani found six strokes in the second round to finish with a two-round total of 152, beating Fordham's Jason Del Rosso by two strokes. The sophomore has cut three strokes off of his scoring average from last season, taking 76.2 strokes to finish a round versus 79.2 a year ago. He now has three career top-10 finishes.
As a team, Robert Morris posted a score of 620 on the 6,912-yard, par-72 layout at Upper Montclair Country Club. The Colonials score beat second-place Fordham by 14 strokes. Northeast Conference foes Monmouth and Fairleigh Dickinson each shot 638 followed by Wagner and Hofstra (661) and St. Francis (N.Y.) (674).
Sophomore Max Cahn (Nyack, N.Y. / Nyack), who shared the first-round lead with classmate Brandon Pompeani (Aliquippa, Pa. / Hopewell), shot a 155 total to finish in third. His second round 77 complemented an opening 78. As for Brandon Pompeani, he tied for fourth by matching his opening salvo of 78 to notch a top-10 finish.
Sophomore Donny Lewis (Wexford, Pa. / North Allegheny) was one stroke back, tying for sixth-place by recovering from an opening round 81 to shoot 76 Tuesday. Senior C.G. Mercatoris (Brookville, Pa. / Brookville) withdrew from competition prior to play beginning Monday.
The victory wraps up a successful fall schedule that saw the squad win two events and finish second in another.
