HUNTSVILLE, Ala. - The Robert Morris University men's ice hockey team survived a furious third period rally by Alabama-Huntsville Friday to pick up a, 4-3, win
Adam Brace (Cobden, Ontario / Canisius College) scored a power-play goal 19 seconds into the third period to give the Colonials a four goal advantage. The Chargers scored three third-period goals to try and rally but Robert Morris held on for the, 4-3, win.
"I was really please with our ability to extend the lead but once we scored our fourth goal we stopped play with urgency and they continued to play with it and made it very close," head men's ice hockey coach Derek Schooley said. "Our penalty kill unit should get a lot of the credit but we should not have put ourselves in that position."
With 2:55 remaining in the third period, Robert Morris earned two minor penalties as Nathan Longpre (Peterborough, Ontario / Mahoning Valley Phantoms) was called for hooking and Brock Meadows (White Rock, B.C. / Salmon Arm Silverbacks) for cross-checking. The Colonials were three-on-five for two minutes but RMU picked up the kill while Brooks Ostergard (Chagrin Falls, Ohio / Bay State Breakers) made four stops during the kill.
Brandon Blandina (Centennial, Colo. / Indiana Ice) scored 1:10 into the first period to give the Colonials an early advantage. Joseph Harcharik (Des Moines, Iowa / North Iowa Outlaws) made it a two goal lead for the Colonials at the 10:39 mark. Ostergard posted 15 first-period saves.
The Colonials lead swelled to three in the second period as Denny Urban (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Ohio Blue Jackets) moved his point streak to three games with his fifth goal of the season. The Chargers began a rally in the third period scoring three times including twice on the power play to close the gap.
Robert Morris returns to action tomorrow against Alabama-Huntsville with puck drop scheduled for 8:05 p.m. EST.
