Dubovec Named Softball NEC Scholar-Athlete of the Year

Moon Township, Pa. - Junior Annie Dubovec (Chagrin Falls, Ohio / Kenston) of Robert Morris University was honored by the Northeast Conference Tuesday for both her performance on the field and in the classroom, as she was named the 2010 NEC Scholar-Athlete of the Year for the sport of softball.

Dubovec, who plays first base and pitches while serving as the designated player for the Colonials, is the third student-athlete from the softball program in school history to earn the award. She joins former pitcher Stephanie Ehrenfeld (1997-2000), who was bestowed the honor in 2000, and former outfielder Nicole Aloi (1998-2001), who took home the honor in 2001.

To be eligible for the NEC Scholar-Athlete of the Year in a sport, a student-athlete must have earned a minimum of 60 semester hours, maintained a minimum cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 3.20 and participated with distinction as a member of a varsity team.

One of three Colonials to start all 48 games in 2010, Dubovec, who carries a cumulative GPA of 3.93 as a mathematics major, was named to the 2010 All-NEC First Team after helping lead RMU to its third straight NEC Tournament.

Dubovec led Robert Morris in batting average (.359), home runs (5), RBI (39), slugging percentage (.538) and on-base percentage (.410) while also finishing second for the Colonials in hits (52), doubles (9) and stolen bases (6). She recorded 14 multi-hit games, tops for RMU, and drove in at least two runs in a game on 10 occasions, which also paced the Colonials.

Named to the ESPN The Magazine District II Academic All-America Team by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA), Dubovec hit a white-hot .465 (33-for-71) in 29 games as RMU's designated player, driving in 26 runs and posting a slugging percentage of .704. From the pitching circle, Dubovec posted a record of 8-9, posting 12 complete games and 72 strikeouts in 126.1 innings pitched.

In addition to the honor for Dubovec, a total of 113 student-athletes from Robert Morris covering 10 spring sports were named to the NEC Spring Academic Honor Roll. To be eligible for the honor roll, student-athletes must have posted a cumulative GPA of 3.20 and be an active member of an officially recognized varsity team. Freshman are eligible for the honor roll.

A total of 25 student-athletes from the Colonials women's outdoor track and field team were named to the 2010 NEC Spring Academic Honor Roll, tops for a spring sport at Robert Morris. Included in that group are freshmen Taylor Crawford (Woodbury, Pa. / Northern Bedford) and Kristie Domis (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Baldwin), who each have compiled perfect 4.00 GPA's. Crawford's major is special education, while Domis is a nursing major.

In addition, Crawford and Domis are two of 36 student-athletes from RMU named to the 2010 NEC Spring Commissioner's Honor Roll. To garner the honor, a student-athlete must maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.75, and freshman are eligible for the honor roll.

The women's outdoor track and field team had eight members named to the 2010 NEC Spring Commissioner's Honor Roll, while the Colonial women's rowing program had seven and the men's lacrosse and softball squads five each.
