Lewisburg, Pa. / Bucknell University G.C—Senior C.G. Mercatoris (Brookville, Pa. / Brookville) had come close so
many times without ever taking top honors at a tournament. Last season, he
finished nine tournaments, earning a top-10 finish in all but one. But
Saturday, Mercatoris finally beat everyone else on the course, finishing first
at the Bucknell Men's Invitational with a three-round total of 211 – just one
stroke over par – to win by three shots.
The Robert Morris University men's golf team finishing
second overall, missing the top prize by one stroke to host Bucknell
University. The Bison came from four strokes back on the final day to turn in a
team score of 300 while the Colonials handed in a 305. Bucknell's 888 total was
just one stroke better than RMU's 889.
Mercatoris finished with the second-most pars in the
field (39) and the fourth-most birdies (7) to finish earn his first victory.
The senior was never worse than one-over for a round, opening and closing the
event with rounds of 71 while sandwiching a 69 in the middle at the 6,257-yard,
par-70 layout at Bucknell University Golf Course.
Sophomore Brock Pompeani (Aliquippa, Pa. / Hopewell) followed
his one-under par second round with a final 18-hole score of 78, finishing in a
tie for 16th among 70 competitors at the event. His twin brother,
Brandon Pompeani (Aliquippa, Pa. / Hopewell), posted a 227 total while carding
scores of 76-74-77 to tie for 28th place.
Freshman Sam Migdal (Ballwin, Mo. / Desmet Jesuit)
sandwiched a 73 between two rounds of 79 to tie for 40th with a 231.
Sophomore Donny Lewis (Wexford, Pa. / North Allegheny) rounded out the
Colonials contingent in a tied for 53rd. He carded rounds of
75-78-81 for a 234 total.
After the Colonials in second place, Fordham was five
strokes back with an 894. Lehigh and Laval tied for fourth with 896 totals
followed by Colgate (898), Saint Peter's and Lafayette (904), Loyola (906),
Fairleigh Dickinson (907), Bucknell “Blue” (912), Ottawa (924) and Messiah
(933).
