RMU Takes Title At Holiday Inn Colonial Classic

Hopewell Township, Pa. / The Club at Shadow Lakes-The Robert Morris University men's golf team successfully defended its title at the 2011 RMU Holiday Inn Pittsburgh Airport Colonial Classic topping the field by five strokes. The Colonials opened the event with a 294 total Monday and followed up with a 306 Tuesday to card the lowest score in each of the rounds at The Club at Shadow Lakes in Hopewell Township, Pa.

Junior Brock Pompeani (Aliquippa, Pa. / Hopewell) led RMU by firing a 146 good enough to finish in second place. After an opening round 72, Pompeani came home with a 74 to finish two-over par overall on the 6,570-yard par-72 layout. Clarion's Ross Pringle was the medalist with a 143 total.

The Colonials beat Northeast Conference foe Mount St. Mary's by five strokes as the Mountaineers totaled 605. Clarion was third (617) followed by Point Park (630), Wagner (640), Robert Morris "White" (642) and Maryland-Eastern Shore (679).

Freshman Bo Lustig (Belle Vernon, Pa. / Belle Vernon), the first round leader after a two-under par 70, held on for third-place after carding a 78 Tuesday giving him a 148 total. Classmate Ryan Prokay (Grove City, Pa. / Grove City) slipped two strokes in the second round to a 76, but combined with his opening round 74 was still good enough to tie for fifth place.

Junior Brandon Pompeani (Aliquippa, Pa. / Hopewell) just missed out on a top-10 finish as he managed to score 78 in each round finishing in a tie for 12th at 156. Junior Donny Lewis (Wexford, Pa. / North Allegheny) tied for 28th at 165.

The RMU "White" team posted scores of 321 in each round to finish sixth overall. Junior Max Cahn (Nyack, N.Y. / Nyack) was 11th as he came home with an 80 to pair with his opening 75. Junior Jim Davis (Wexford, Pa. / North Allegheny) was 14th thanks to scores of 78 and 79. Senior Robbie Holdcroft (Pennsylvania Furnace, Pa. / State College) was 23rd (84-79=163) while junior Kyle Peters (Charleston, S.C. / Spartanburg Methodist) finished 30th (84-83=167).
