RMU Wins in Overtime to Cap Thrilling Comeback

Box Score Pittsburgh, Pa. - Freshman Rebecca Vint (Caledon, Ontario / Brampton Junior Thunder) tied the game late in the third period, which allowed junior Cobina Delaney (Stittsville, Ontario / Ottawa Senators) to record her second game-winning goal in as many outings as the Robert Morris University women's hockey team moved to 3-0-0 for the first time in program history with a 4-3 overtime victory against Minnesota State Friday evening at the RMU Island Sports Center.

It marked Robert Morris' first overtime win at home in school history and continued a recent string of third-period comebacks on their home ice. In four of their last six home games, the Colonials have come back from a third-period deficit to earn at least one point while three of those occasions have witnessed RMU score in the final three minutes of regulation to tie its opponent.

Vint's late goal, with 2:11 remaining, capped yet another strong performance from the rookie who notched her third-consecutive multi-point game to open her career, the first time any Colonial has ever registered multiple points in each of the first three games of a season. She tallied both her second multi-goal game and second three-point effort in a span of just eight days while scoring late to save RMU from its first defeat of the season.

Delaney's game-ending goal, her first-ever overtime lamp-lighter, made her just the second Colonial in program history to record game-winning scores in back-to-back contests. With the tally, she extended her point streak to a career-long five games, a span over which she has eight points.

Sophomore Thea Imbrogno (Etobicoke, Ontario / Mississauga Jr. Chiefs) collected her second multi-point effort of the season, along with a game-tying assist, as she now has at least two points in six of her last nine regular-season games.

Junior defenseman Jamie Joslin (Richmond Hill, Ontario / Aurora Panthers) tallied two assists, including one on the game-tying goal, to notch at least one point for her third-consecutive game. She now has two multi-point games this season, more than her previous career total entering the 2011-12 campaign. Joslin also significantly aided the defensive effort by registering eight blocked shots, equaling the Mavericks' team total single handedly.

Although Robert Morris rode early leads to victory in each of its first two wins, the Colonials were unable to use the same formula against Minnesota State, a squad that upset nationally-ranked Mercyhurst just one week ago. The Mavericks got on the board first at the 6:32 mark of the opening frame--after an initial Minnesota State shot was deflected and failed to reach the cage, the puck bounced around in front of the crease, and a Maverick was able to bang it home in the midst of a scrum.

Minnesota State was able to add to its edge just over five minutes later with its second score coming at the 11:33 mark.

It appeared as though RMU would enter the first intermission trailing by two, but Vint ensured that was not the case. After taking a pass along the boards from classmate Katie Fergus (Oakville, Ontario / Burlington Jr. Barracudas), who had herself received it from Joslin, Vint moved forward with Imbrogno on a 2-on-1. Vint decided to keep it and deftly put it home past the goaltender who may have been expecting the streaking Imbrogno to fire the shot. Even though it trailed, RMU actually outshot the Mavericks, 8-7, in the opening 20 minutes.

The Mavericks soon reestablished their two-goal edge when they registered a 5-on-3 tally just over five minutes into the second stanza. With RMU searching to find its rhythm on offense, the Colonials' defense would step it for the remaining portion of the second. Despite three additional Minnesota State power plays in the period, the Colonials held firm to stay within striking distance although they still trailed 3-1 after 40 minutes.

Robert Morris received the spark it needed early in the third, starting with a faceoff win from Vint. The rookie won the offensive-zone draw towards the center of the ice where Imbrogno soon collected it and whistled into the net, beating the netminder in the five-hole with just over 16 minutes to play.

With time ticking down and Robert Morris growing increasingly desperate, Vint and Imbrogno teamed up to even the proceedings. After Joslin sent a pass from the defensive third ahead to Imbrogno, the sophomore skated into the final third. Imbrogno was heavily pressured and closely watched by the Maverick defense, which allowed Vint to calmly streak through the back door practically unnoticed. Imbrogno's pass to the freshman was on the mark, and the rookie did not disappoint, sending the Colonials into celebration.

Minnesota State had a few chances in the final minute, but their last gasp shot attempt was blocked away by Fergus.

The Mavericks had a strong point-blank opportunity in the first half of the overtime session, but junior netminder Kristen DiCiocco (Niagara Falls, Ontario / Stoney Creek Jr. Sabres) stood tall to give the Robert Morris offense one more chance.

After an offensive faceoff, sophomore defenseman Kylie St. Louis (Windsor, Ontario / Southwest Wildcats) not only kept the puck in the zone at the blue line, but sent it forward to Delaney who was in behind most of the Maverick defense. Delaney was forced to collect the puck and circle around the cage, but she then showed tremendous poise. In the middle of Maverick defenders, she lifted the puck top shelf over the goaltender to give RMU its third-consecutive victory to open the season.

DiCiocco moved to 2-0-0 this season with the victory. The netminder saved each of the Mavericks' final 19 attempts on net, including two notable saves, one in the final minute of regulation and one in overtime.

Fergus' assist also allowed her to take home at least one point in her third straight game to open her collegiate career.

With the win, Robert Morris is now unbeaten in its last six home games, breaking the previous Colonial program record in that category.

Robert Morris will seek its second straight series sweep as it looks to move to 4-0 Saturday in the series finale. The Colonials and Mavericks will battle beginning at 2:05 p.m.
