EAST LANSING, Mich. – Oct. 29, 2011 –Junior defenseman Tyler Hinds and freshman forward Cody Wydo tallied
their first career goals on Saturday night as the Robert Morris men's hockey
team fell to Michigan State by a score of 6-2 at Munn Ice Arena.
Saturday's action would start with a bang as the
two teams combined for four goals in the game's first eight minutes of play. The
Colonials held a one-goal lead twice in the first period but could not overcome
a strong performance by Michigan State's top line of Mike Merrifield, Lee
Reimer and Greg Wolfe. The trio of Spartans accounted for five of MSU's six
goals and 13 of the team's 18 points including a five-point, hat trick
performance from Reimer.
Robert Morris (2-5-0 overall, 0-1-0 Atlantic
Hockey) struck first on Saturday night when junior defenseman Tyler Hinds
(Orleans, Ontario / Nepean Raiders) scored his first goal in 32 career games to
put RMU up 1-0 at 4:34 of the first period. Senior forward Nick Chiavetta
(Harrisburg, Pa. / New York Applecore) set up the odd-man rush for the
Colonials goal, feeding Hinds for the one-timer and picking up his first point
of the season with the assist.
After Reimer evened the score less than a minute
later, RMU freshman forward Cody Wydo (Allen Park, Mich. / Motor City Metal
Jackets) would find the scoreboard for the first time in his young career at
6:46 to retake the lead for the Colonials. The Michigan native, playing in just
his second career game, found pay dirt with assists from junior forward Adam Brace (Cobden, Ontario / Canisius) and senior forward Cody Crichton (Palgrave,
Ontario / Brampton Capitals).
But the Spartans (4-4-0, 1-3-0 CCHA) wouldn't yield
another goal all night. Reimer would tally a second time at 7:46 of the first
to send the game into the first intermission tied 2-2, and from there the
Spartans controlled the scoreboard. Merrifield would help Michigan State take
its first lead of the night at 7:13 of the second period, and the Spartans
would add three insurance goals in the third to complete the sweep.
After the Colonials had their nation's best, 23-for-23
penalty killing streak snapped on Friday, the team returned to its usual
stinginess – going 3-3 while down a man on Saturday. But RMU was unable to take
advantage of four power-play opportunities in the loss, snapping a streak of
three-straight games with a goal while on the advantage.
Senior goalie Brooks Ostergard (Chagrin Falls, Ohio
/ Bay State Breakers) took the loss for Robert Morris, stopping 34 shots on the
night while Drew Palmisano picked up the win for the Spartans after a 17-save
night.
The Colonials return to action next weekend,
hosting American International at Clearview Arena on Friday and Saturday. Both
games are slated for 7:05 p.m. ET start times.
