Box Score Hamden, Conn. - Oct. 7, 2011 -The Robert Morris field hockey team opened Northeast Conference competition with a 2-1 overtime loss to Quinnipiac on Friday afternoon. Freshman midfielder Jamie Hartley (Tamworth, Australia / University of Newcastle) tallied the Colonials' lone goal.
After opening the season with wins in its first three overtime contests, Robert Morris (6-8 overall, 0-1 NEC) has now dropped its last two contests that went past regulation. The Colonials dropped a 3-2 decision to Pacific last Sunday that went all the way to penalty strokes.
On Friday, penalty corners would prove to be a factor in the decision as all three goals were a result of the set piece. Quinnipiac (7-5, 1-0) would hold a 10-8 advantage on penalty corners in the game. The Bobcats would strike first at 8:55 when Megan McCreedy knocked in a rebound off a Quinnipiac corner for her first goal of the season. The Colonials would answer back later in the first half however when Hartley would tally her fifth goal of the year to tie for the RMU season lead at 21:44. Freshman defender Michelle Lewthwaite (Macarthur, Australia / Westfield Sports) and senior midfielder Chantele Crow (Dauphin, Pa. / Central Dauphin) would earn assists on the goal.
After being outshot 6-10 in the first half, Robert Morris would pace the second half with a 7-3 shot advantage, although neither team could break the 1-1 tie in regulation. The first overtime session would not last long though as Quinnipiac found the winning shot just three minutes into the added time. Kimberly Cunniff tallied her eighth goal of the year to pick up the game winner, again off a corner, with a blast from the top of the circle. McCreedy and Ashley Gradwell earned assists on the game-winning goal.
Freshman Erin McKenzie (Lismore, Australia / University of Queensland Tech) would make six saves in the losing effort, allowing two goals as her record fell to 5-8 on the season. Nicole Lewis picked up the win to improve to 7-5. Lewis stopped nine shots in the game, allowing one goal.
Robert Morris returns to action on Sunday at Sacred Heart. The Colonials/Pioneers contest is set to begin at 12 p.m. ET.
