RMU Sticks Stay Hot in 5-2 Win over Pioneers

MILFORD, Conn. – Freshman Cody Wydo scored twice and the line of Scott Jacklin and Nick Chiavetta and Jeff Jones remained hot – combining for seven points – as the Robert Morris men's hockey team topped Sacred Heart 5-2 on Friday night to remain unbeaten in its last four games.

The trio of Jacklin (Kimberley, British Columbia / Trail Smoke Eaters), Chiavetta (Harrisburg, Pa. / New York Applecore) and Jones (Revelstoke, British Columbia / Merritt Centennials) factored into three of the Colonial's five goals while Wydo (Allen Park, Mich. / Motor City Metal Jackets) tallied the remaining two for Robert Morris. The Colonials (6-6-1 overall, 4-2-1 Atlantic Hockey) improved to 3-0-1 all-time against the Pioneers while picking up two league points in the win.

Chiavetta continued to be the prime offensive threat for the Colonials on Friday night. The senior led Robert Morris with a goal and two assists in the win against the Pioneers and now has nine points during the Colonials' unbeaten streak.

Jacklin, who has seen similar success over the stretch, put the Colonials up 1-0 with the only goal of the opening stanza when he put a backhand behind Steven Legatto at 15:10. The freshman, who earned this week's Atlantic Hockey Travel Team USA Rookie of the Week honor, has tallied seven points over the last four games. Chiavetta and Jones would tally assists on the goal.

Jones wouldn't wait long to add to the deficit, scoring his second of the year just 14 seconds into the second period after being set up by Jacklin and Chiavetta. Wydo would make it 3-0 at the midway point when he poked in his third goal of the year at 10:33 after Legatto made the initial save on junior forward Adam Brace (Cobden, Ontario / Canisius). Brace and senior forward Cody Crichton (Palgrave, Ontario / Brampton Capitals) were credited with assists on the play.

Sacred Heart (1-13-1, 0-9-1 Atlantic Hockey) would break onto the scoreboard with a pair of quick goals late in the second period. Ben Ketchum and Mat Gingera would both tally for the Pioneers in a span of 20 seconds at 18:18 and 18:38, respectively, but that would be all the offensive damage Sacred Heart could muster.

Wydo would come out of the second intermission with a bang, scoring his second of the night just 1:51 into the third period to put the Colonials up 4-2 and Chiavetta would seal the win with a power-play goal at the 12:05 mark. After missing the last five games with an injury, senior forward Tom Brooks (St. Louis, Mo. / St. Louis Bandits) would tally an assist on Wydo's third period goal in his return to the Robert Morris lineup as would Crichton, who notched his second point of the night on the goal. Freshman defenseman Tyson Wilson (Brockville, Ontario / Brockville Braves) would also return from an injury on Friday and earn an assist on Chiavetta's power-play goal to go along with Brace's second assist of the evening. The Robert Morris power-play unit would finish the game 1-for-5 while the Colonial penalty kill would blank the Pioneers in all four attempts.

Senior goaltender Brooks Ostergard (Chagrin Falls, Ohio / Bay State Breakers) improved to 3-4-1 on the season with the win after stopping 29 shots on Friday night. Ostergard has posted a 3-0-1 record over the last four games for the Colonials. Legatto took the loss for the Pioneers with a 30-save performance.

The Colonials return to action tomorrow night with the series finale against Sacred Heart. Saturday's game starts at 4 p.m. and will be held at Webster Bank Arena in Bridgeport, Conn.
