Avon, Ind. / Prestwick County Club - Playing in its first spring event since returning north, the Robert Morris Univeristy men's golf team finished 13th at the Butler Spring Invitational held at Prestwick Country Club in Avon, Ind. The only Northeast Conference team in the field, the Colonials struggled to a first-round total of 324 before recovering 12 strokes in the second round to finish with a 636 total.
Purdue University easily outpaced the rest of the field finishing with a 578 to win the event by 20 strokes. Boilermaker William Sjaichudin shot eight-under par to take medalist honors. IUPUI and Loyola (Ill.) tied for second at 598. Dayton and Southern Illinois-Edwardsville each shot 601 in a tie for fourth. Detroit-Mercy was sixth (605) followed by Cleveland State (613), Evansville and Wright State (621), Butler (624), Valparaiso (625), Youngstown State (630) and Robert Morris (636).
Senior C.G. Mercatoris (Brookville, Pa. / Brookville) finished outside the top-10 for the first time this season and just the second time in the last two seasons by tying for 11th. The senior shot 74 both days at the par-72, 6,960-yard layout at Prestwick.
Sophomore Brock Pompeani (Aliquippa, Pa. / Hopewell) used an even-par 72 Tuesday to move into a tied for 22nd place with a 151 total. Sophomore Brandon Pompeani (Aliquippa, Pa. / Hopewell) carded 84 in both rounds for a 168 total and a tie in 72nd. Senior Shawn Courson (Parker, Pa. / Allegheny-Clarion Valley) was one stroke and one place back (87-82=169) while sophomore Max Cahn (Nyack, N.Y. / Nyack) was tied for 76th (88-84=172).
