Pompeani Finishes Second; Colonials Third At Barton Invitational

Savannah, Ga. / The Club at Savannah Harbor - The Robert Morris University men's golf team opened the spring portion of its schedule with an impressive third place showing at the Lonnie Barton Invitational at the 6,918-yard, par-72 layout at The Club at Savannah Harbor in Savannah, Ga. Sophomore Brock Pompeani (Aliquippa, Pa. / Hopewell) paced the Colonial line-up by tying for second place with a two-over 146 total.

Sacred Heart's David Renski paced the field by two strokes, finishing with a 144. High Point University won the event with a team score of 597. Sacred Heart was second (600) followed by Robert Morris (619), Drexel (625) and Fairfield (627). Bryant, host Long Island and Mount St. Mary's (632) tied for sixth with Wagner (647) trailing everyone.

Sitting two over after the opening five holes, Brock Pompeani got his first of five birdies on the 408-yard par-four sixth hole. En route to a career-best one-under par 71, the sophomore birdied three of four holes - the ninth through the 12th - and capped his round with a bird on the 419-yard 18th hole. A string of bogeys during the second round offset three birdies as Pompeani settled for a round of 72 and his second straight top-10 finish of the year.

Senior C.G. Mercatoris (Brookville, Pa. / Brookville) finished in a three-way tie for 10th place, shaving five strokes off his opening round 79 to fire a 74 and tally a 153 total. Sophomore Max Cahn (Nyack, N.Y. / Nyack) tied for 23rd with rounds of 81-78=159. Sophomore Donny Lewis (Wexford, Pa. / North Allegheny) found seven strokes between rounds, carding 85-78=163, to tie for 37th. Sophomore Brandon Pompeani (Aliquippa, Pa. / Hopewell) rounded out the team scorers in 41st position turning in 83-81=164.

Playing as an individual, senior Shawn Courson (Parker, Pa. / Allegheny-Clarion Valley) had rounds of 75 and 81 to finish in a tie for 18th place.
