Last Second Goal Caps RMU Comeback in Tie

WATERTOWN, Mass. – Jan. 7, 2012 Cody Wydo scored with just over one second left in regulation as the Robert Morris men's hockey team rallied from a two-goal third-period deficit to tie Bentley 2-2 in overtime on Saturday night.

Wydo (Allen Park, Mich. / Motor City Metal Jackets) moved into a tie for third in the nation among all rookies when he poked a loose puck into the net with just 1.6 seconds left in the third period to complete the two-goal comeback for the Colonials (9-8-3 overall, 7-3-3 Atlantic Hockey). Wydo, who leads Robert Morris in goals this season and ranks fourth on the team with 12 points, was set up on the power-play, extra-attacker goal by freshman defenseman Tyson Wilson (Brockville, Ontario / Brockville Braves) and sophomore forward Colin South (Sewickley, Pa. / Bay State Breakers).

While Wydo capped the comeback, junior defenseman Tyler Hinds (Orleans, Ontario / Nepean Raiders) got it started with his second goal of the year at the 4:44 mark of the third period. Senior forward Tom Brooks (St. Louis, Mo. / St. Louis Bandits) and senior defenseman Josh Jones (Scenery Hill, Pa. / Hawkesbury Hawks) picked up assists on the goal to spark the Colonials comeback.

Special teams were once again a major factor in RMU's ability to salvage a league point from the weekend. In addition to Wydo's late power-play goal, the Colonials blanked Bentley in five power-play opportunities on Saturday night to finish the weekend 8-for-8 on the penalty kill and reclaim the title of the nation's best penalty kill (83-for-88, .943).

Bentley (6-9-4, 6-3-3) would strike early in the first period when Aaron Stonacek scored 1:31 into the opening stanza before Brent Gensler would pad the lead with another goal to open the second at 4:34. But RMU junior goaltender Eric Levine (Wheeling, Ill / Pembroke Lumber Kings) would stifle the Falcons' offense the rest of the way – ending the night with a 31-save performance and moving his season record to 4-2-1. Bentley's Branden Komm made 35 saves to move to 6-7-4 on the year.

The tie bodes well for Robert Morris, which returns to Clearview Arena and the RMU Island Sports Center next weekend for a two-game Atlantic Hockey series against Holy Cross. The Colonials are 2-0-0 this season following a loss
