RMU Falls Short Against Princeton

Box Score

Pittsburgh, Pa. - A day after the Colonials took down the Yale University Bulldogs in their season opener, the Robert Morris University women's hockey team fell short Saturday afternoon in a non-conference matchup against the Princeton University Tigers, 6-3.

Sophomore forward Rebecca Vint (Caldeon, Ontario / Brampton Jr. Thunder) would tally a goal and an assist in the contest, allowing her to lead the Colonial scoring effort.

After a balanced effort by both teams for the first 10 minutes of play, RMU would score first with 10:21 on the clock.  The Colonials had back-to-back scoring chances when senior forwards Cobina Delaney (Stittsville, Ontario / Ottawa Jr. Senators) and Kelsey Thomas (Hamilton, Ontario / Hamilton Hawks) each fired a hard shot on net. After the second shot, Vint would rebound the puck and find the net to notch her first goal of the 2012-13 season.  Delaney and Thomas would be awarded the first and secondary assists on the score.

Princeton would respond five minutes later with a goal of its own when junior forward Corey Stearns scored after receiving the puck from linemate Alex Kinney to tie the game at one a piece.

Sophomore forward Katelyn Scott (Brighton, Mich. / Belle Tire) would tally her first goal of the season just 4:37 later.  After a caused turnover by fellow classmate Katie Fergus (Oakville, Ontario / Burlington Jr. Barracudas) in Princeton territory, Scott would pick up the puck and take it to the net herself to put the Colonials on top, 2-1.

The Tigers came out strong in the second period as they scored two goals, the first goal 6:00 into play, and the second with 1:37 left on the clock.  With the two scores Princeton senior forward Kelly Cooke would tally her first goal and second assist of the game.

The third period would also go in favor of Princeton as the Tigers scored two goals within 2:17 to extend their lead to 5-2.

Junior forward Kristen Richards (Toronto, Ontario / Niagara University) would notch her second goal in two games with 6:33 left in the third period.  Richards would find the net past Princeton netminder Kimberly Newell, after a pass Vint.  Junior assistant captain Thea Imbrogno (Etobicoke, Ontario / Mississauga Jr. Chiefs) would receive the secondary assist on the third RMU goal.

The Colonials kept fighting for the remainder of the third period, but could not register another score.  The Tigers would stifle the Colonial effort by scoring their sixth goal with only 2:04 left in the contest.

Senior goaltender Kristen DiCiocco (Niagara Falls, Ontario / Stoney Creek Jr. Sabres) would receive the start between the pipes for RMU. Delayne Brian (Winnipeg, Manitoba / Wayne State University) would enter the game in third period to register her first game played as a Robert Morris Colonial.

Despite the loss, the Colonials have now scored at least two goals in their first two contests of the season.  The RMU penalty kill unit remains perfect as they killed off each of Princeton's power play opportunities.

RMU now hits the road for an extended record-setting stretch.  The Colonials will play 10 straight road games over the next six weeks.  RMU will start off the trip next weekend as it travels to New England to take on nationally ranked Northeastern on Friday and number three Boston University on Saturday.  Games are scheduled to start at 7:00 p.m. Friday and 2:00 p.m. on Saturday.
