Turnovers Prove Costly In Loss to Duquesne

Box Score

Moon Township, Pa. / Sewall Center - The Robert Morris University women's basketball team gave the ball away 26 times and that proved to be the difference in a 61-47 setback to Duquesne University in the yearly-meeting between the cross-town rivals at the Charles L. Sewall Center Sunday afternoon. Duquesne was able to take those 26 turnovers and turn them into 29 points.

Junior forward Artemis Spanou (Rhodes, Greece / Nea Smyrni) tallied her fourth double-double of the season as she scored 15 points and pulled down 12 rebounds. Freshman Lou Mataly (Toulouse, France / Lycee Bellevue) chipped in with 10 points knocking down a pair of three-pointers. She also had five rebounds and four assists.

The Colonials got off to a slow start while the Dukes knocked down four of their first six attempts to jump out to a 11-2 lead just four minutes into action. A set of free throws by Spanou and a jumper by freshman guard Randi Jackson (Oakland, Calif. / Bishop O'Dowd) cut the margin to five points, 21-16, before the Dukes would carry a 34-23 into the break.

After a lay-up by Anna Gailite (Riga, Latvia / Riga Secondary) to start the second half, Duquesne scored four points to push the margin to a game-high 13 points. Robert Morris went on a 6-0 run over the next three minutes to cut the lead to 38-31 with 14:08 to play. Freshman guard Ashley Ravelli (Milan, Italy / The Hun School) scored all four of her points during the run. The Dukes fought back, however, building the lead back to 11 points.

A three-ball by Spanou cut the lead to eight points with 3:39 to play, but again Duquesne had the answer. They scored six unanswered points over final three minutes to take the 61-47 victory.

Jocelyn Floyd led the Dukes with 14 points. Wumi Agunbiade chipped in with 13 points and Orsi Szeecsi had 11 points.

Robert Morris travels to Minnesota for a 2:00 p.m. contest next Sunday, Dec. 9.
