Box Score Pittsburgh, Pa. - Junior Dayna Newsom (Oakville, Ontario / Oakville Ice) notched one of the biggest goals of her career as she recorded the game-tying score with just 3:09 remaining in regulation to rally the Robert Morris University women's hockey team to a tie against No. 5/6 Mercyhurst Saturday evening in each team's regular-season finale in College Hockey America (CHA) action at the RMU Island Sports Center.
Robert Morris was often down in Saturday's contest, but it proved it was never out. Mercyhurst opened up a two-goal lead within the first 10 minutes and also led 3-1 late in the second period, but the Colonials orchestrated a multi-goal comeback to draw even. Bailey Bram put the Lakers ahead on a controversial goal early in the third, and it appeared as though the nationally-ranked power would prevail.
However, Newsom and the Colonials had other ideas. The junior picked up a puck in the neutral zone and produced an incredible individual effort. She carried the puck into the offensive end under pressure and then circled behind the net before flipping a backhand, wrap-around attempt into the cage. Newsom had also provided an assist on RMU's third goal, notching her second multi-point game of the season, the eighth of her career and her first ever in CHA play.
Saturday's game marked the second time in the last three meetings between these teams in which Robert Morris produced a late rally to earn at least one point. The Colonials again proved they could match up with one of the nation's top teams as the shot count was nearly identical. In fact, RMU's 36 shots Saturday are the most the Lakers have allowed to a CHA opponent since Robert Morris began its women's program.
Sophomore Thea Imbrogno (Etobicoke, Ontario / Mississauga Jr. Chiefs), the reigning CHA Player of the Week, matched Newsom's multi-point effort with a goal and an assist. With the pair of points, she moved into sole possession of second place in single-season points at RMU and also moved into a tie for second in single-season assists. It marked the 10th multi-point game of the season for Imbrogno and the 17th of her career.
Freshman Rebecca Vint (Caledon, Ontario / Brampton Junior Thunder) joined Newsom and Imbrogno by also tallying a goal and an assist. Vint's 13th multi-point game of the season extended her single-season school records in points (42), goals (21) and assists (21).
While RMU put up four scores, it may not have come away with a point had it not gone a perfect 4-for-4 on the penalty kill against the nation's best power play. It marked the second time in the last three meetings that the Colonials have been perfect against the Mercyhurst power play as they went 7-for-7 in their thrilling 3-2 victory at Mercyhurst Jan. 21. One of the Laker power plays Saturday was also granted in the overtime session, which made the kill even more significant for the Colonials.
Mercyhurst came out of the gate hot and quickly claimed the momentum as it opened up a 2-0 lead less than halfway into the opening frame.
However, the tide began to turn when Vint banged home a puck right out in front at 14:11 of the first after receiving a pass from Imbrogno who was stationed behind the net.
Although it trailed after 20 minutes, Robert Morris came out with a fire in the second stanza and skated with noticeable intensity. Despite RMU's efforts, the Lakers would score the frame's first goal, 15:20 into the action, to take a 3-1 lead.
The Colonials again responded almost right away to the two-goal deficit and would score twice to tie the game over the next 3:01.
Vint poke checked the puck off the stick of a Laker in the Colonials' offensive end and immediately flipped it to Imbrogno who was right out in front. Imbrogno rifled a shot right away and found the twine to make it 3-2.
Just 53 second later, Robert Morris would even the Lakers. Newsom played the puck out of the defensive zone where junior Kelsey Thomas (Hamilton, Ontario / Hamilton Hawks) won it and skated in on a 2-on-1. Thomas' initial shot was blocked, but the ricochet bounced to classmate Cobina Delaney (Stittsville, Ontario / Ottawa Senators) who blasted a wrister home to even the proceedings.
Bram broke in on a breakaway early in the third and was awarded a goal even though it was in doubt whether the puck actually crossed the red line.
Newsom responded for RMU by picking up the hosts with a great play when she evened the game late in third.
Robert Morris carried its momentum into overtime as it fired each of the first five shots of the extra stanza before a Colonial penalty changed the tide of play.
Despite facing the Laker power play in a do-or-die situation, RMU allowed only one shot during the man advantage to preserve the tie and earn a well-deserved point.
One of the other keys for Robert Morris was its willingness to block opposition shots yet again. RMU blocked 19 Laker attempts Saturday, just missing hitting 20 for the 15th time in its past 28 games.
Senior assistant captain Brianna Delaney (Stittsville, Ontario / NCCP Raiders) also tallied an assist on Vint's goal to extend her career points and assists marks to 119 and 68, respectively.
Cobina Delaney's score tied her career high in goals and moved her into sole possession of ninth place in points at RMU (48).
Thomas' assist gave her the first 25-point season of her career.
Each of RMU's three seniors--Brianna Delaney, captain Paige Pietrangelo (Niagara Falls, Ontario / Hamilton Hawks) and assistant captain Kathryn Stack (Edmonton, Alberta / Edmonton Thunder)-- were honored in a brief ceremony before the game, their final regular-season home contest.
RMU will now have next weekend off before it hosts the CHA Tournament Friday, March 2, and Saturday, March 3. The Colonials will be the second seed and will play either Niagara or Syracuse Friday depending on the result of the series between those two teams next weekend.
