RMU Falls to 21-0 Hawaii to Close Tournament

Honolulu, Hawaii - The Robert Morris University softball team finished its play in Malihini Kipa Aloha Tournament by dropping a 9-0 decision to nationally-ranked and undefeated Hawaii at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium Sunday afternoon.

RMU had dropped a tight 3-1 contest to Radford Sunday morning to open the day.

Senior Sarah Capp (McKees Rocks, Pa. / Montour) led the offensive effort for the Colonials as she went 3-for-5 on the day, including posting a perfect 2-for-2 line against Hawaii and 2011 All-American Stephanie Ricketts. With that effort, Capp moved past 80 career hits on the day.

Freshman Nicole Sleith (Smithton, Pa. / Yough) had a solid day in the circle for Robert Morris as she allowed three runs in a combined 8.2 innings. Sleith was especially impressive against host Hawaii as she twirled 2.2 innings of hitless, shutout relief. Sleith struck out five batters, against just one walk, including striking out the side in order in the bottom of the third.

Freshman outfielder Tess Apke (Mt. Lebanon, Pa. / Mt. Lebanon) tallied her first-collegiate double as she knocked in a run in the opener against the Highlanders.

After Robert Morris went down in order in the top half of the first in its opener, Radford knocked back-to-back solo homers with two down in the bottom half to take an early advantage.

RMU got one run back in the second, and it all started with two outs. Junior Britta Grafton (Jamestown, Pa. / Jamestown) kept the frame alive by working a 10-pitch walk and was followed by senior Allie Patton (Poland, Ohio / Poland) who put down a well-executed bunt single. Apke then drilled a double that hit the base of the fence in left on the fly, scoring Grafton in the process. With two runners in scoring position, a groundout by RMU kept Radford in the lead.

The Colonials got out of the second when senior Katrina Gallagher (Canonsburg, Pa. / Canon McMillan) collected a ball along the line in left and rifled it in to second to nab a Highlander runner trying to stretch a single into a double.

Gallagher singled into center with one out in the third, but RMU could not advance her. After Sleith sent down Radford in order in the bottom half, Grafton knocked a one-out single into left in the fourth, but the Colonials were again unable to put together a string of hits.

Radford got an insurance run in the bottom half courtesy of a single, a sacrifice, an illegal pitch and a bloop single into shallow right.

After a relatively quiet fifth for both sides, RMU looked to put something together in the sixth when Capp and freshman Samantha Santillo (Ellwood City, Pa. / Lincoln) put together consecutive singles with one out. However, Radford was able to get a 5-3 double play on a ball that was hit right down the third base line to end the threat.

Santillo threw out a runner trying to steal in the bottom of the sixth to give RMU a chance to come back in the seventh. Patton reached on a 1-2 pitch to open the final frame, but the Colonials were unable to move a runner into scoring position and fell by a pair of runs.

Hawaii jumped on top right away in the first by putting up a crooked number quickly as the Rainbow Wahine scored eight runs on five hits, including a home run.

Capp nailed a sharp single into center to open the second and moved to second with two outs when sophomore Chelsea Evans (Beaver Falls, Pa. / Riverside) walked on a full count, but RMU was unable to push one across.

Hawaii added a single run in the second with a one-out solo home run.

Each side went down in order in the third as Sleith collected a trio of K's in the inning.

Capp drilled the eighth pitch of her second at bat into center once again. She moved to second when sophomore Chelsea Siar (Glenshaw, Pa. / Shaler Area) walked with two outs, but Hawaii was able keep RMU off the board.

Robert Morris went down 1-2-3 in the fifth to close out the run-rule contest.

After returning to the U.S. mainland, Robert Morris will look to get back on track next weekend as it plays five games in UMBC's Spring Classic Friday, March 16, through Sunday, March 18. The Colonials will open play with a single game Friday as they meet Georgetown at 3:45 p.m.
