RMU Roars Back to Trim Sycamores, 67-60, in CIT

Colonials use 16-3 run in second half to earn victory

Terre Haute, Ind. - The Robert Morris University men's basketball team used a 16-3 run in the second half to turn a 10-point deficit into a three-point lead en route to a 67-60 victory over Indiana State Tuesday night at the Hulman Center in the opening round of the 2012 CollegeInsider.com Postseason Tournament.

The Colonials improved to 25-10 with the victory and advance to the second round with a date and opponent to be announced, while the Sycamores concluded their 2011-12 season with a record of 18-15.

Trailing, 49-39, with 12:16 to play after a three-pointer by ISU's Lucas Eitel, RMU scored 11 straight points to take its first lead of the contest, 51-49, with 7:14 to go after a layup from freshman forward Lucky Jones (Newark, N.J. / St. Anthony).

Five different Colonials scored, including three-pointers from redshirt sophomore guard Coron Williams (Midlothian, Va. / Christchurch School) and sophomore guard Anthony Myers (Washington, D.C. / Charis Prep).

Justin Gant answered the layup by Jones with one of his own to tie the score, 51-51, but a tip-in by senior forward Lawrence Bridges (Detroit, Mich. / Columbus State Community College) gave Robert Morris the lead for good, 53-51, with 5:46 remaining.

Myles Walker would hit the front end of a pair of free throws to close Indiana State within one, 53-52, but Williams drove uncontested to the basket for a layup on RMU's next possession to help the Colonials open up a 55-52 advantage.

Redshirt junior forward Russell Johnson (Chester, Pa. / Chester) would hit a pair of free throws at the 2:21 mark of the second half to give Robert Morris a 59-55 edge, and after a missed three-pointer by ISU's Jordan Printy sophomore forward Mike McFadden (Newark, N.J. / Technology) converted a layup on a feed from redshirt junior guard Velton Jones (Philadelphia, Pa. / Northeast Catholic) to give the Colonials a 61-55 lead with 1:39 to go.

Indiana State wouldn't go away, as R.J. Mahurin made it a one-possession game with a three-pointer, but Robert Morris sealed the victory at the chalk, going 6-for-6 at the free-throw line in the final 34 seconds, including a 4-for-4 performance by Velton Jones.

RMU fell behind by as many as 12 in the first half, 21-9, but trimmed its deficit to nine at halftime, 36-27.

The Sycamores were able to again stretch their advantage to double digits on seven different occasions in the first eight minutes of the second half, but the Robert Morris defense stiffened during its game-changing run, holding ISU to just 23.1 percent (3-for-13) shooting from the field in the final 12 minutes of action.

Williams led a balanced scoring attack for the Colonials with 11 points, while Velton Jones contributed 10 points, eight assists and five rebounds. Johnson chipped in with nine points and a game-high 11 rebounds, while Lucky Jones added nine points and four caroms.

Mahurin took home game-high honors in scoring with 17 points for Indiana State, while Gant added 11 points off the bench. RMU held ISU's leading scorer, Dwayne Lathan, to just five points on 2-of-6 shooting.

Notes: The victory marked RMU's second in a postseason tournament and its first since a 64-54 win over Georgia Southern in the opening round of the 1983 NCAA Tournament ... In the second half Robert Morris held a 20-10 edge in points in the paint, a 10-0 advantage in points off turnovers, outscored the Sycamores, 8-0, in second-chance points and received 17 points from its bench ... Velton Jones finished 5-for-7 at the charity stripe against Indiana State, extending his single-season school record in free throws to 201 while also establishing a new career record in the category with 391 ... Robert Morris established new single-season team records in both free throws (579) and rebounds (1,245) in the win over Indiana State.
