Sleith Shuts Out Georgetown in Tourney Opener

Baltimore, Md. - Freshman Nicole Sleith (Smithton, Pa. / Yough) spun a three-hit shutout against BIG EAST foe Georgetown to lead the Robert Morris University softball team to a 1-0 victory in its opener at the UMBC Spring Classic Friday afternoon.

Sleith notched her second shutout of the season, as she also shut down Ohio in February, and allowed only three singles on the day. She tied her season high with eight strikeouts and did not walk or hit a single batter. In her last 15.2 innings, Sleith has registered 17 strikeouts against just a single walk.

Redshirt senior Jessica Calderone (Wilmington, Del. / St. Mark's) went 2-for-4 for RMU to move into the top 10 in career hits as she tallied the 162nd and 163rd base-knocks of her career. Calderone collected her third multi-hit effort of the season and the 45th during her time as a Colonial.

Senior Jaci Timko (Houston, Pa. / Chartiers Houston) continued to stay slightly ahead of Calderone in the career hits category as she went 1-for-3 and scored the contest's lone run. Timko moved into a tie for sixth in career hits with 166 while scoring the 104th run of her career.

Calderone led off the game by sending a single into left in the top of the first. She advanced to second on a sacrifice by senior Katrina Gallagher (Canonsburg, Pa. / Canon McMillan) but was stranded after a pair of groundouts retired the side.

Georgetown also got a runner to second with one away in the bottom half, but Sleith got a lineout and a groundout to send it to the second, the beginning of a stretch which would see her send down 12 consecutive Hoyas and 19 of 20 overall.

Both sides went down in order in the second frame as Sleith notched two K's in the inning.

Sophomore Cassie Show (Connellsville, Pa. / Connellsville) moved to second with two outs in the third but was left there after a groundout. Sleith once again struck out two Hoyas in the third while also handling a popup herself.

RMU got the only run it would need in the fourth, and Timko started the frame by sending a hard single back up through the middle. Senior Sarah Capp (McKees Rocks, Pa. / Montour) followed with a successful sacrifice that moved along Timko. With two down, a Hoya error extended the inning that simultaneously sent Timko to third. The first pitch to the next batter got by the catcher to the backstop, and Timko came scurrying toward the plate. She slid in headfirst and got her hand across the dish before the pitcher, covering the plate, could apply the tag.

Sleith again registered a 1-2-3 inning in the bottom half on a pair of flyballs and a groundout.

Show knocked a hard single with one gone in the fifth, but Robert Morris could not advance her.

Georgetown got a leadoff single in the bottom half and got its runner to second with one out, but a strikeout and a fielder's choice ended the chance.

Robert Morris had an opportunity to add to its lead in the sixth when Capp and junior Maritza Jimenez (Vineland, N.J. / Vineland) knocked consecutive singles with one out. After a popup, junior Britta Grafton (Jamestown, Pa. / Jamestown) nailed an opposite-field single hard to right, but the ball was hit so well that the right fielder was able to get it quickly and throw a Colonial pinch-runner out at the plate to end the threat.

Sleith got a pair of strikeouts as the Hoyas went in order in the sixth before Calderone knocked a two-out single to left in the seventh, but RMU could do nothing further in the top half.

Georgetown had a chance for a comeback in its final at bat as a Colonial miscue and a Hoya single put runners on first and second with just one out. The next batter hit a short popup behind the left side of the circle. Show charged toward it but could not reach it in the air and was forced to play it on one hop. After gathering it, Show alertly spun on a dime and fired to Grafton at third to force the lead runner and get the important second out of the inning. With the tying run in scoring position and the winning run aboard, Sleith notched a swinging strikeout to end the inning and put the game in the win column for RMU.

After opening the weekend with a win, Robert Morris will look to keep its momentum going with two games Saturday. The Colonials will meet Siena at 9:15 a.m. and then take on Brown at 11:25 a.m.
