Moon Township, Pa. - The Robert Morris University women's tennis team garnered a pair of Northeast Conference road victories this weekend, earning a 4-3 victory at Monmouth Saturday afternoon before posting a 5-0 win at St. Francis (N.Y.) Sunday.
The two victories helped the Colonials improve to 6-13 overall on the 2011-12 campaign, including 3-2 in league play.
Sophomore Carolina Mourao-Teixeira (Rio De Janeiro, Brazil) highlighted the weekend for RMU, picking up a pair of wins at the No. 1 singles flight.
Against the Hawks, Mourao-Teixeira had no problem with Nicole Lippens, posting a 6-1, 6-0 victory. The next afternoon against the Terriers, Mourao-Teixeira continued her solid play against conference foes with a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Ewa Opala.
Thanks to the two wins, Mourao-Teixeira improved to 11-8 on the 2011-12 campaign, including a perfect 5-0 in the NEC. All 11 of Mourao-Teixeria's wins this season have come at No. 1 singles, the most since former Colonial Nora Peters (1997-2001) established a school record at the flight with a 17-5 (.773) record during the 1999-2000 season.
Also earning singles victories for Robert Morris in the win over Monmouth were juniors Samantha Alves (Rio De Janeiro, Brazil) and Isabella Novella (Santo Andre, Brazil). Alves defeated Ashley Sandler, 6-4 and 6-2, while Novella earned a 6-2, 6-0 win over Liz D'Arcy.
RMU sealed the win over the Hawks thanks to victories at each of the three doubles matches to earn the point.
Mourao-Teixeira and junior Carla Limon (Cordoba, Mexico) teamed up for an 8-3 win over Lippens and Brooke Verdiglione at the No. 1 flight, while Alves and junior Clarissa Chen (Winnipeg, Manitoba / Winnipeg Secondary) defeated Dana Ferrari and Jessica Slinger, 8-6 at No. 2.
Against the Terriers, RMU earned the doubles point as well as singles victories at the No. 3, 5 and 6 flights in addition to Mourao-Teixeira's win.
Alves knocked off Camille Petrizzo, 6-0 and 6-1, at No. 3, while Novella swept Jovan Bojinovic, 6-0 and 6-0, at No. 5. Freshman Kourtney Passero (Victor, N.Y. / Victor Central) also earned a sweep with a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Akuila Edwards at No. 6.
Mourao-Teixeira and Limon also teamed up at the No. 1 doubles flight for an 8-1 win over Arianna Van Sluytman and Opala of St. Francis (N.Y.), while Chen and Alves posted an 8-1 win over Petrizzo and Natasha Edwards, at No. 2.
Robert Morris concludes its regular season Wednesday, April 18, with a 3:00 p.m. match at Bucknell before the 2012 Northeast Conference championships this weekend in Princeton, N.J.
