RMU, Canisius Play to Scoreless Draw

Moon Township, Pa. / North Athletic Complex - The Robert Morris University men's soccer team and Canisius battled to a 0-0 tie at North Athletic Complex Sunday afternoon. Senior goalkeeper Toba Bolaji (Vaughan, Ontario / Maple) earned the clean sheet, the 12th of his career, by making eight saves.

The Colonials are now 0-1-1 while the Griffs earn their second consecutive tie to move to 0-0-2.

Robert Morris had the best chance of the opening 45 minutes. After holding possession in the offensive third, sophomore Jared Latchford (Enola, Pa. / Pennsboro) ripped a 30-yard effort that rang off the crossbar and out of play.

Midway through the second half, RMU would again threaten. A diagonal ball across the defense by Daniel Calabretta (Brampton, Ontario / St. Marguerite d'Youville) found freshman Bruce Cullen (Pickering, Ontario / Pine Ridge). Cullen, coming in on a hard angle from the left, unleashed a hard shot to the near post, but Griffs keeper Kareen Gray was up to task, parrying the ball wide of the left post.

Ten minutes later and 10 minutes before the end of regulation, the Griffs, with a quick counterattack, generated their best chances of the game. A close range shot by Gavin Falconer was stopped by Bolaji, but the rebound went right back to the middle of the box. With Bolaji still scrambling to get back in position, Falconer had a second chance at a wide-open net, but his effort from 18 yards out struck the right post and caromed out of danger.

Twice in the first overtime session, Cullen had chances to tally the golden goal. In the 97th minute, quick distribution by Bolaji led to a counter for RMU when sophomore Devon Williams (Kingston, Jamiaca / St. Georges) sprung Cullen down the left side. With a defender tracking him, the freshman rushed his shot and missed wide left with just the keeper in front of him.

Cullen came within inches of another goal two minutes later, but he and Griffs keeper Gray arrived at the ball at the same time and his sliding shot was deflected wide of the left post.

In the second overtime, Cullen was again the beneficiary of some good inside passing by the Colonials. Again, however, Gray was up to talk pushing away his shot from 12 yards wide of the right post.

Canisius held a 24-20 advantage in shots and a 6-5 margin on corner kicks. Gray had six saves for the Griffs.

The Colonials travel to Navy for a 7:00 p.m. game Thursday, Aug. 30.
