N.Y. - In the fourth meeting of RIT and RMU this season, the Robert Morris University women's hockey
team fell, 2-0 to the Tiger's in College Hockey America (CHA) play at Frank
Ritter Ice Arena.
With just 56 seconds remaining in the first period, RIT
scored the opening goal of the contest and eventual game-winner on its third
power play chance of the period. Sophomore forward Marissa Maugeri found the
net from the right offensive faceoff zone to tally her sixth goal of the
season. Senior captain Ariane Yokoyama tallied the primary assist on the goal
while sophomore defenseman Emilee Bulleid was credited with the secondary
assist.
The entire first period was roughly played and hard
fought as both teams combined to commit six penalties, three for each squad. In
last night's contest, six penalties were committed throughout the entire first
40 minutes of play. The shot count favored the Tigers, 11-7 at the end of the
first period.
Identically to the first period, RIT scored with less
than one minute remaining on clock to take a 2-0 lead heading into the second intermission.
With 20.2 seconds left on the scoreboard, Tiger sophomore forward Celeste Brown
scored her eighth goal of the year. Sophomore defenseman Morgan Scoyne and senior captain Tenecia Hiller registered assists on the second RIT goal. The assists mark the eighth of the season for both Scoyne and Hiller.
The Tigers again led the shot count in the second period,
13-5 over the Colonials. The RMU penalty kill unit denied each of RIT's power
play chances in the second frame.
RMU came out hard in the third period outshooting RIT
12-2, but the Colonials eventually fell 2-0 to the Tigers. Robert Morris has
six power play opportunities throughout the contest, but could not capitalize
on its scoring chances. The Colonial penalty kill unit allowed only one goal on
RIT's six chances. In league play, the penalty kill unit currently owns a kill
percentage of 84%.
As a team, the Colonials blocked 12 shots in the rematch
contest against RIT. Senior forward Kelsey Thomas (Hamilton, Ontario / Hamilton Hawks) and junior assistant captain Thea Imbrogno (Etobicoke,
Ontario / Mississauga Jr. Chiefs) led the Robert Morris
offensive effort each tallying four shots on net. On power play opportunities,
RMU outshot RIT 14-8.
Senior netminder Kristen DiCiocco (Niagara Falls, Ontario / Stoney Creek Jr. Sabres) earned the
starting nod between the pipes for RMU. DiCiocco registered 24 saves in this
afternoon's loss. DiCiocco has now played 580 minutes in conference games to
register a .925 save percentage and a 2.07 goals against average.
The Colonials are now 10-9-3 this season with a league
record of 6-5-1. Robert Morris returns home next weekend to take on CHA member
Syracuse. Puck drop is set for 3:05 p.m. both Friday, Feb. 1 and Saturday, Feb.
2. The series with Syracuse marks RMU's 'Skate for the Cure' weekend. The
Colonials will be raising funds and awareness for breast cancer research.
