Box Score
Bemidji, Minn. – The
Robert Morris University women's hockey team defeated Bemidji State, 2-1, this evening behind two second period goals.
The first period saw chances turned away for both the Colonials and Beavers. After senior assistant captain
Brandi Pollock (Virden, Manitoba / Westman Wildcats) went to the box for hooking, Bemidji State rifled off seven shots but only one of them were on net.
RMU would come back later in the period with a shot barrage of six consecutive attempts, but the two that were on net were pushed away by Beavers goaltender Brittni Mowat. The Colonials would then go on the power play at the 11:15 mark after Madison Hutchinson was penalized for tripping, but they couldn't capitalize on the man advantage.
Junior forward
Maddie Collias (Roseville, Mich. / Belle Tire) dented the scoreboard first 3:49 into the second period. Senior assistant captain
Thea Imbrogno (Etobicoke, Ontario / Mississauga Jr. Chiefs) gathered the puck in the offensive zone and found her fellow forward, who then beat Mowat for her first goal of the season.
A little more than six minutes later, RMU would extend the lead to 2-0 with a goal from freshman forward
Maeve Garvey (Oakville, Ontario / Burlington Jr. Barracudas). The unassisted strike was her first goal of the 2013-14 campaign as well.
With five seconds remaining in the game, Bemidji State would finally get on the board and, in turn, spoil junior goaltender
Courtney Vinet's
(Camrose, Alberta / Edge School) shutout. Tess Dusik corralled a pass from Hanna Moher on the man advantage and pushed it past Vinet. That goal would matter little as junior
Rebecca Vint (Caldeon, Ontario / Brampton Junior Thunder) won the following faceoff, which secured the Colonials victory.
Vinet stopped 28 of 29 shots and gained her first win of the season. RMU won more faceoffs than Bemidji State (30 to 21) and were outshot (29 to 18). The Colonials were 0-5 on the power play and killed off all four penalties.
RMU will look for their third win of the season and a sweep tomorrow. Puck drop is scheduled for 5:00 p.m. at the Sanford Center.
