Colonials Shut Out in MAAC Opener

Erin McKenzie made seven saves in the loss

Box Score Lawrenceville, N.J. – The Robert Morris University field hockey team dropped their Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) opener to Rider this afternoon, 2-0.

The Colonials couldn't seem to get it going against the preseason favorite Broncs, and were outshot 13-4. Rider also held advantages in shots on goal (9 to 2) and penalty corners (8 to 4).

Kalyn O'Brien tallied the first goal for the Broncs, as she poked in a pass from Sandra Penas at the 9:19 mark of the first half. Penas would register a goal of her own in the second half with an unassisted backhand shot.

Junior goalkeeper Erin McKenzie (Lismore, Australia / University of Queensland Tech) stopped seven of nine shots on the day.

RMU continues conference play next weekend with a trip to the Nutmeg State. The Colonials will take on Quinnipiac on Friday at 3:00 p.m., and then travel about a half an hour southwest to Fairfield, Conn. for a game against Sacred Heart at noon on Sunday.
