Colonials Edge Vermont Behind Garvey's Multi-Goal Game

Freshman Maeve Garvey registered two goals on the evening, helping RMU move to 5-2-0

Box Score

Pittsburgh, Pa. – Freshman forward Maeve Garvey (Oakville, Ontario / Burlington Jr. Barracudas) notched a goal in the first two periods, helping the Robert Morris University women's hockey team earn their first Friday home win of the season in a 4-3 victory.

Garvey's two goals give her a team-high four for the season, and also make her the first Colonial to register a multi-goal effort on the 2013-14 season.

Senior assistant captain Thea Imbrogno (Etobicoke, Ontario / Mississauga Jr. Chiefs) led off the scoring with her third goal of the season at the 9:08 mark of the first period. With Gina Repaci in the penalty box for hooking, senior captain Kristen Richards (Toronto, Ontario / Niagara University) gathered the puck at the blue line and passed it to freshman forward Brittany Howard (St. Thomas, Ontario / Burlington Jr. Barracudas). Howard would then fire a shot that deflected off Vermont goaltender Madison Litchfield's pads, and Imbrogno found the rebound and batted it in, giving RMU the first goal of the contest.

The Colonials would soon make 2-0 with Garvey's first of two goals. Howard found senior defenseman Kylie St. Louis (Windsor, Ontario / Southwest Wildcats) at the blue line and St. Louis rifled a slapshot at the net. Garvey would raise her stick and get enough of it, deflecting it past Litchfield for her third goal of her freshman campaign.

The Catamounts would pull within one with 36 seconds left to go in the first period. Kellie Dineen corralled the puck in her offensive zone and fired a shot at freshman goaltender Jessica Dodds (London, Ontario / London Jr. Devilettes), who was making her second-straight start. The puck was initially stopped but it trickled off Dodds' shoulder and across the goal line, ending Dodds' shutout streak at 143:28.

RMU wouldn't take long in the second period to extend the lead back to two. Senior defenseman Anneline Lauziere (St. Thomas, Ontario / London Jr. Devilettes) threw a shot that was stopped by Litchfield, but the rebound trickled to Garvey, who took advantage of the second chance just 25 seconds into the second frame.

The Colonial lead would stretch to three less than three minutes later after junior forward Rebecca Vint (Caldeon, Ontario / Brampton Junior Thunder) lit the lamp for the second time this season. After Vint won a faceoff, freshman defenseman Mikaela Lowater (Thornhill, Ontario / Mississauga Jr. Chiefs) gathered the puck and passed it off to Imbrogno. Imbrogno would then find Vint on the left end, and the junior would shoot it five-hole past Litchfield.

Vermont would cut the lead to two at 10:32 mark of the second period, as Amanda Pelkey rifled an unassisted slapshot past Dodds.

Pelkey would strike again 13:33 into the final 20 minutes with her teammate Brittany Zuback serving a penalty for hooking. RMU head coach Paul Colontino called a timeout after the goal to settle his team down, and the strategy worked as they didn't allow a single shot on net for the remaining 6:27 to secure the victory.

Dodds earned her fourth win (4-0-0) of the season after stopping 24 of 27 shots.

The Colonials will attempt to register their second sweep of the season tomorrow afternoon against the Catamounts. Faceoff is scheduled for 2:05 p.m. at 84 Lumber Arena.
