Robert Morris Comeback Falls Short

Jess Martin-Brown brought the Colonials within one in the second half

Box Score

Radford, Va. – The Robert Morris University field hockey team ended their non-conference schedule this afternoon and fell to Radford, 2-1.

The Highlanders struck first with two goals in the first half. Marianna Parker tipped in a shot from Alayna Versage to put Radford up 1-0, then Parker found Ashton Cox following a penalty corner and Cox found the back of the net.

The Colonials would strike back in the 42nd minute as junior Michelle Lewthwaite (Macarthur, Australia / Westfield Sports) centered a pass to sophomore Jess Martin-Brown (Mount Gambier, Australia / University of Adelaide), and Martin-Brown tipped it past Highlanders goalkeeper Sidney Encarnacion.

RMU had a shot to tie it late in the second half when junior Jamie Hartley (Tamworth, Australia / University of Newcastle) gathered the ball inside the arc. Her first shot deflected high off the iron, but she gathered the rebound and tried a second shot. However, that attempt was blocked.

Radford held advantages in shots (10 to 8) and shots on goal (8 to 5). The teams were even on penalty corners with three apiece.

Looking for a record-tying eighth win, the Colonials will open up Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) play next Sunday with Rider.
